Suppose Hatton was to retire on the spur of the moment the way that Floyd did. Would you say that he is an HOF candidate right now?

I'd say he is just shy. He was the recognized champ at 140 with a very good win over KT. He picked up a title at 147 but that by no means made him the champion at that weight. He had some good wins over some decent names but really the only big name wins on his resume are Tzyu and Castillo. In Castillo's case it was more of a name than a real opponent. I know that plenty of people will disagree with me here and say that worse fighters are in the HOF and you are probably right about that part but IMO HOF really should only be for the very best of the very best. IMO Hatton was or has been a very good fighter but just short of being a great one.

No. He has only beaten 1 peak world class fighter (even they were inactive). Everyone else was hand picked - including Castillo.

nope, he doesnt deserve it at all. his 2 big opponents were past their prime. when he did decide to step up the comp against urango & collazo, he looked less than stellar. it's not a big deal he lost to floyd b/c floyd is such a great fighter. but then he follows his loss up with a not so imppressive performance. unless, he dominates against the legit 140 lb contenders, he will never be in the HOF.

I don't think he's quite worthy, but as far as getting in, who knows really? It is the Hall of Fame, not Hall of Great. He'll probably get in.

    Yes.
He is a throwback to a golden age of boxing.
multiple time world champion, and the pride of a nation.

if he wins his next few fights, especially pacman then yes as he has done so much for the sport, dlh lost nearly all of his superfights but because he has done so much for boxing he will be a HOF, if hatton beats malignaggi then pacman he's 100% HOF

De La Hoya has way more quality wins over champs and contenders than Hatton does.

That's a bad comparison, the resumes of the two are not even close.

    NO!!

But if Gatti somehow gets in then bets are off and you may as well accept ****ing anyone, Hatton included. Hell, accepting Ken Norton was bad enough.

Its hard to say. He has only really beaten two great fighters. Castillo was shot and Tzsyu was past his peak (i don't think Tzsyu was shot like some do but he definately was not in his prime).

However he has beaten alot of the top people in his weight division which is all you can really ask of a fighter. If he goes on to beat Mallinaggi and Torres the you have to ask yourself that although he didn't beat many great fighters he did dominate his division so does that qualify him for the Hall?

I see it the same way you do- that he's very close, but not quite there yet. I'd like to see him pick up a belt or two at 140 one more time- the division's got fresh, new beltholders and it'll really improve his legacy in my eyes if he can stamp out a couple of them before he fights Pacquiao to show he's still the class of the division. Malignaggi's a good start; taking out any of the remaining beltholders (Bradley, Holt-Torres winner, Kotelnik) would be a good followup, finished with a Pacquiao fight in the second half of 2009. I'm probably being too aggressive in projecting it, but I'd like to see if Hatton's got one more run like that in him.

Jose Suliaman is already in.

Forget about Gatti and Hatton for now.

Other guys that are in Canastota and eligible right now are more worthy:

    Brian Mitchell
    Donald Curry
    Marlon Starling
    Esteban Dejesus
    Julian Jackson
    Eddie Booker
    Lloyd Marshall

At first I would say no...but hat may change...

then I think Barry McGuigan got in for beating Pedrosa on his last legs ....

I think Hatton has done more than McGuigan.

Hatton only lost to the 2nd best fighter of the last 20 years.

Barry got smoked by little know steve Cruz
