1. I know a lot people talk about Haye's opponents at heavy, but does he really need it, won't he go done as an ATG cruiserweight? If so top what? Yea Yea I know the Cruiserweight division hasn't never been that great and isn't even that old, but can't he argue that he has done more as Cruiser than the Klits did at Heavy? 2. So I guess the second question is if the klits and Haye retired today who's campaign in their respective weight classes is better the Klits @ heavy or Haye @ Cruiser?
Is Buster Douglas an ATG heavyweight because he held the unified HW title for a couple months? There's your answer.
Sorry but he never even properly unified the belts and managed to avoid Cunningham and Adamek the whole time
You'd have to go with Vitali's resume over Haye at CW. Closer between Haye and Wlad, especially given the recent state of the HW division. I can't recall Wlad ever being in a pick-em fight! He's only lost in fights where he entered as strong favourite. At least Haye went to France to KO Mormeck (who was not himself that night)...Wlad has had an easy career in my eyes, especially for heavyweight champ
No...Cruiser isn't that old but we've had Holy, Qawi, De Leon, Gomez...other guys...and things, or something, and whatnot.
2 world title fights....Mormeck and Macerenelli....in a division which is easily the worst and lest cared about in boxing. And thats it. You cant call him an ATG on that resume.
Take a look at the IBF ratings to see who was competitive at cruiser during Haye's brief reign. http://www.ibf-usba-boxing.com/index.php Note that Cunningham was the IBF belt-holder since Nov 06 before he lost to Adamek. Also note that right as Haye beat Macc to snatch the WBO belt, Adamek beat Bell and became the #1 IBF contender. So there's 2 world class guys Haye didn't face (and the only reason Huck wasn't also up there is Cunningham beat him in Dec 07). Some of the opponents Haye beat to become Ring Champ have since been discredited. Fragomeni was a good fighter when he fought Haye but since then was exposed by Erdei and lost to a faded Wlod. Mormeck was past his peak when he faced Haye. Maccranelli has been sparked out 3 times since and likely go down in history as a weak belt-holder. Who else did Haye beat? Take a look at Haye's record and you see the claim to being a cruiser great rests almost entirely on these 3 wins. Haye's next best wins are journeymen fighters like Abdoul or Hurov. Cunningham, Huck, Wlod, Alfolabi, etc were all active at the time Haye moved up. Had Haye gone on to defeat at least 2 of Cunningham, Adamek, Jones, Bell and Wlod, then he would have a case to be named ATG at the weight. But based on the actual record Cunningham has more of a claim to ATG status then Haye does. Even Adamek's title reign at cruiser is arguably more deserving of the title ATG then Haye's. Be honest, can you disagree that Adamek's win over Cunningham is more impressive than Haye's win over Mormeck? So I think it's an unwritten story...Haye 'might' have dominated Cunningham and Adamek but we'll never know. Haye had good reason to move up in weight so he did. What we do know is Haye did not get a chance to face the best fighters in the cruiserweight division when he was Ring Champ.
I have Haye just ahead of Holyfield , both as a cruiserweight and Heavyweight. He has just done so so much in each division.
