Is Haye's Punching Power at Heavyweight Massively Overrated?

Haye has very good power in both hands no doubt

 

Haye is blatantly heavy-handed. I don't hear anyone saying he's super-human or anything so how is he over-rated ?

Haye isn't a tremendous one punch puncher. He won't end your night on one shot, but he does hit very hard.

 

He has good cumulative power. He hits hard and often with impressive accuracy. But he doesn't have a massive amount of one punch power.

 

He can't compare to the guy in your avatar, thats for sure.

 

What you also neglect to mention is that going into the Haye fight, Barrett was on a 3 fight knockout streak in under 2 rounds or less including avenging the Couser loss. He was more than ready for a fight. Just look at his farcical entrance.
It could be argued that Haye ruined him. The same thing can be said of a few of Hayes opponents young and old. The guy likes a scrap.

 

at heavyweight his power might be overrated, but not his sharpness. He is a sharp puncher and punches decent and above average. But against the Klitchkos they are just too big. If they were the same size he would stop both of them early.

 

Haye has no one-punch KO power at HW. But - and that's what counts after all - he has good power in both hands and he can punch devastating, accurate combinations. Look at his HW fights. You will never see him knock out a guy with a single hand. In fact between Barrett and Ruiz I think there were 9 knockdowns and they all got back up. Neither of them was sent to dreamland for a minute or so.

He knocks HWs down (not out) with 3-4 punch combinations, many of them with very good accuracy right on the tip of the chin.

To summarize: the raw and single hand power is probably average for a heavyweight, but the combinations through their accuracy and the accumulation of punches more than make up for that. His offensive arsenal is top notch for a HW. His workrate on the other hand is below average. He doesn't try to throw a lot, but when he throws it seems to be very well aimed with a high level of effectiveness.

P.S. Those guys writing "powerful like prime Tyson" or "ATG power" have zero clue. Do you guys watch the fights at all? Or let your fantasy take over?

 

his power might be overrated, i think it's his speed and accuracy what makes his punches so powerfull.

 

I think it gets overrated by some, and him being in this **** era just makes his look better.
for a natural cruiseweight, I would really say his power is decent. but is he on an ATG list for punchers? no.

 

Haye combines his very good power with sharp, quick punches which catch the opponent off guard and badly stuns them. However, as mentioned before, his finishing ability is very poor. I believe he is a great puncher when he relaxes and throws. But when he's go a man on ***** street, he tends to get over excited and loses the opportunity. That's why he doesn't tend to finish things as quick as he can IMO.

Let's not forget he almost knocked out Solis in the amateurs with head gear on before gassing out and getting finished by a superior finisher. Haye's smothering of punches when he's excited means fighters are able to survive before he calms down and knocks them down again. That's why he gets a high amount of knock downs en route to ending fights. (11 or 12 knock downs in 4 fights at heavy).

 

I think he's a pretty big puncher. If his power is overrated, it's not "massively".

What is often very overrated is his hand speed. I hear people compare his hand speed to Ali and Tyson in their primes. He has pretty good hand speed for single shots, particularly with that right hand. His combination punching is not especially fast nor fluid.
