Is it? Middleweight is terrible. Super middle is ok. Light-heavy has 2 outstanding guys at the top but that's about it. Heavy has Usyk, Dubois, Fury, Joshua, Parker, Zhang, Bakole, Kabayel etc.
No, but it seems that way because the ****ers are actually fighting each other. 175, 135, 140 and 115 are stacked. I think 140 has the most talent.
Kind of? The thing is that depth has been allowed to stack up because the champs are not getting around to fighting anyone new. If you look at the ages of most of these up and comers besides Dubois and Jared Anderson these really aren't the next generation of prospects they are guys that Fury, AJ, Wilder and now Usyk have failed to get to. Kabayel, Bakole, Hrgovic, Ajagba, Frank Sanchez are all in their 30s. Wardleys about to turn 30 in 2 months.
140 is the deepest division. A "deep" division is judged by how many actual elite, standout fighters are competing at a given time. Everyone in the top 10 at 140 I'd call elite or at least a standout in a given stylistic ability. No one at HW other than Usyk and Fury are elite or standouts. That's why everyone (save Usyk) is winning and then losing, there's parity at the weight class. It's wide open for a reason in the top 10. Someone from 11-20 at HW, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them beat anyone in the top 10 other than Usyk, Fury and Zhang. We just saw a last on his legs Chisora do this to a top 6-10 Joyce. Saw it with Miller really beating Fat Andy. Saw it with Dubois over Miller, a top 5-8ish Hrgovic and then a top 2-3 Joshua.................wide open division. That would not happen at 140, or 135..............or even 154 or 175. MW that could happen, and look at that division..............currently sputtering
Hard to say, but one thing is for sure. It is a golden era of HW boxing, with upsets and interesting characters. While many people moan how the division is terrible, this era will be remembered fondly in decades to come. It’s just like the nineties in that it was bashed constantly at the time, Lewis was called a hype job and Holyfield was called a fake champion and just a pumped up CW, today we consider it the greatest HW era next to the seventies. Years from now this current era is going to be considered just as good as the nineties.
No and it’s not even close to the deepest in my opinion. Heavyweight has good depth and Usyk and Fury are 2 great names to headline a division but 154, 140, 135 and 126 are considerably deeper top to bottom especially prospects wise
Heavyweight is the most interesting division division right now, but I wish Kaybayel, Parker, Bakole, Hrgovic, and several others would soon have fights scheduled. 126 might be the deepest division, with at least 8 very good fighters, and Inoue moving up next year. 135 and 140 are very good, but there's a lot of ducking going on, with Stevenson and Davis avoiding top opponents. 154 and 175 are interesting, with Bivol-Beterbiev coming up and plenty of good matchups that could be made.
