Bouncing off the ropes is illegal but it is understood as a wise, smart move ( rope a dope Ali - Foreman). Holding on to the ropes to prevent a knockdown is obviously not in the books... Actually it should be in the books as a virtual knockdown as everybody should understand!!! The ropes are boundaries of the ring, they are not to be used like the ring floor and the inner space.

Israel Vasquez vs. Rafael Marquez in their 3rd fight at 12th round. The referee ruled a KD when Rafa held on the ropes in the closing seconds of the fight.

The funny part is after that round, JMM looks dizzy and went to Pac corner.

Look at the last frame in the .gif... you can see marquez sitting on the bottom rope, you can see his weight being supported by the ropes (you can see they are bent outwards and not straight). KD.

He's still in denial that Pac won that fight. This video alone will show that Pac should have won by two points overall. This round should have been scored, 10-7. Not only 10-8. This time, it was the referee's error. Pac won by SD though.

In the first fight, it was the judge who erred in scoring.

We can therefore make a case that Pac won both fights.

When you look at the sequence in in regular time and not in slow motion, it looks like Marquez loses his footing but is shuffling his feet to prevent from going down.

Imo, Marquez forearm and glove touched the ropes coincidentally as he was gathering his footing......you can see even from the gif, that Marquez never reached out to grab the ropes, the ropes were just there as he was gathering his footing and his right hand happend to touch the ropes.

Marquez never wrapped his glove around the ropes to pull himself up.
Its clear as day in regular time that it was not and should'nt have been ruled a knockdown.
Believe me, if Marquez was really holding that rope, the ropes would have shown alot more bend in them....as it was, the ropes barely moved as Marquez arms comes in contact with them.

Call it coincidental contact.....the ropes just happened to be there as Marquez was gathering his footing.

Refs rarely call those types of things knockdowns anyways, even when the fighter has his glove fully wrapped around the ropes and then recoups himself, in which in this case, JMM did not have his gloves wrapped around the ropes.

Sorry *******s, the ref got it right for once!:yep

Yes is should be ruled a knockdown. If the knockdown event occurred in the center of the ring the rope couldn't be grabbed and he'd have ended up on the floor. I was under the impression that this was in the rules :huh

holding on to the rope should be a kd if he clearly got hit and is going down..and if he does it more than once take a point off and etc.
