Holmes had a good chin. His defense was sometimes good but sometimes leaky.

It’s both great chin and tremendous ability to recover when hurt. Yes he got decked, but he always got up, recovered well, and fought back hard. Shavers and Snipes both hit him with perfectly timed and perfectly placed punches. Most guys would have been out cold. Holmes got up and won by KO. The very heavy-handed Weaver hurt him too, but also got stopped. Weaver de facto ended John Tate’s career. The only one to finish him was prime Tyson, when Holmes was old, past-it, and inactive. Even then, he got up after being hit with a devastating right, the thud of which was so loud you could hear it clearly even on tv. Even fat and way older, he went the distance with Holyfield, and beat the very heavy handed Mercer who was coming off a win in which he nearly decapitated/killed Tommy Morrison.

Totally agreed. The shot that Shavers knocked Holmes down with was one of the heaviest I've ever seen landed, and I seriously doubt most heavyweights would be able to survive it - if they were able to get up at all.

He also fought heavy punchers like prime Cooney and Weaver twice . His recuperative powers he showed with Shavers showed true championship heart.
