This thread is ridiculous and must have been inspired by extreme bias or abundant ignorance or both. Hopkins was extremely athletic. He wasn't Roy Jones athletic, but Roy might well have been the greatest athlete to ever enter the squared circle. Just adding to what you've mentioned, Hopkins was extremely agile, has outstanding balance, tremendous reflexes, excellent speed of both hand and foot, incredible stamina, and an amazing ring IQ that helped amplify all of these attributes. The only thing he really lacked was one punch KO power. I'm baffled that someone questioned Hopkins' stamina, because even as an old man, there was still only one instance where Hopkins was outworked and outhustled in the championship rounds, and that was against Calzaghe, who himself had amazing stamina. Is your reading comprehension failing you? This thread is discussing the athleticism of Hopkins IN RELATION TO fellow ATG's. The claim that he's in the lower tiers of athleticism among this group is not easily disputed. Hopkins is absurdly athletic compared to the common man, and very athletic compared to the common boxer. The typical ATG? No. His ring IQ is what got him to where he is, and this is proven time and again by his success in the later years. This post atsch
Hopkins stamina wasn't special. He didn't have a very high workrate. His speed wasn't that good either. Numerous guys he fought were faster than him. Hopkins was a spoiler. A guy who headbutted and took away what you did best. He also loved fighting cans, losing and knocking out Welterweights.
Let's look at some ATG'S over the last 20 years and see if Hopkins is more athletic than the other ATGs. Wlad, Vitali, Lewis, Jones, Gonzalez, Tito, DLH, Holyfield, Mayweather, Morales, Marquez, Pacquiao, Mosley, Calzaghe. All these fighters are more athletic than Hopkins. Barrera and Toney are ATG fighters who may be less athletic than Hopkins. Basically all ATG fighters are more athletic than Hopkins.
I've watched quite a few of Hopkins' fights from the mid to late 90's, admittedly not as many since 2005 and onwards. He was very athletic, he moved around the ring very well, granted he didn't dart in and out like a Roy Jones but he didn't need to. Without a doubt, one of the most well rounded fighters I've seen. I don't think I've seen one fighter do so many things to such a high standard as Hopkins. If you were to have a bar chart with all his skills and traits measured (I guess like a video game lol), the bars would all be even and all sitting at 80 to 85% with the exception of Ring IQ which would be at 100%.. You can't say that about many other fighters, they'd have peaks and troughs.
Are you basing this on his physical appearance? Because he never gassed and even went as far as doing pushups between rounds. To me that is pretty athletic.
Some people equate speed and abitlity to dance around the ring with being athletic. If that's whats athletic to some, you shouldn't get points for being athletic in boxing, though by the way a lot of members in this forum have judged fights in the past, I think maybe they credit speed and agility over actual fistic effectiveness.
The fact that he's still able to compete at the level he is at while over 50 years old is all you need to know about his athletism. Speed and power are just 2 small pieces of the athletic pie
