Don't get me wrong, Briedis fought a great fight and is clearly a very good boxer. He will be a handful for anyone and is a deserved world champion having beaten Huck away from home. But that didn't look anything like the Huck of old last night. The telling evidence for me was the fact that Huck didn't throw even one of his trademark unorthodox combinations that he is famed for. Not one. I know Briedis hits hard and done good work on the inside to prevent these attacks from Huck but in my eyes Huck just didn't look capable or hungry enough to launch an assault. Sure Huck even gave a much better showing at heavyweight v Povetkin where the counters would have been much harder than what Briedis landed. I just don't think Huck had the capability or the desire last night to do what he does best so it could be all over IMO. Great fighter in his day all the same. Briedis Usyk will be a good watch.
Huck is shot. He's had a heck of a career. I would've loved to see the Glowacki rematch but it is what it is.
Might not have been in his best shape, but physically he did not look shot. As far as game plan and ring generalship are concerned - looked pretty shot. I am not sure he anymore has the hunger that drove him years ago.
No not quite, but he's getting there, he was just hyper cautious against Briedis, who is a huge puncher, he was afraid of getting Glowacki'd again with a counter, so he played it safe.
Huck was never a good boxer , actually he has no boxing skills at all , he doesnt even know how to throw a Punch. He was a Fighter and had heart. But he doesnt have that heart anymore , so he is definitely shot.
To me it looked like his explosiveness and speed are completely gone (which isn't really surprising since this is the first thing that goes), he can't surprise a technical fighter who can keep him behind a jab anymore. He didn't have much to really threaten Briedis yesterday. Also, after the Glowacki KO he just seems way too cautious. He should have started taking risks around the 7th or 8th round where it was clear that he was losing but he never even tried to get any momentum.
I expected better from Briedis too, and Huck is not what he used to be but would still beat most cruiserweights. I was thinking Briedis was the no2 in the division but I think he might be no3 now. Gassiev would be my no2 atm but it is close. I just rate Gassiev as a super tough fighter, his chin is elite, and the power is top notch as well. Lebedev can crack and he didn't really wobble Gassiev. I think Breidis is very hittable, he has the better skills but I feel like Gassiev would slow him down and hurt him. Lebedev is actually quite skillful at avoiding shots and has great head movement but Gassiev slowed him down to the body and caught up to him. I think he would do the same to Breidis.
He's not shot, but definitely isn't what he used to be. The Huck of old would have given it a go in the mid-late rounds. Heck, I was pretty shocked that he didn't. You'd think all of the clinching, wrestling and general lack of fighting early on was just to tire Briedis out, and leave him more vulnerable to the Huck's brief explosive bursts that usually steal him close rounds... Actually there were 2-3 rounds that Briedis stole in the last 30 seconds, which really baffled me because that's always been Hucks M.O......
It's possible he just had a bad night for whatever reasons but he looked pretty shot to me. He had absolutely nothing for Briedis (apart from a rabbit punch late on) - I wouldn't be in a rush to watch his next fight if there even is one. A good run but I think its a new day up at cruiserweight now.
Breidis looks like a calm collected character, a smart fighter, he wasnt getting into anything rough with huck. but had huck opened up, breidis would have took his head off. Also Huck didnt look big at the weigh in, same height, and mairis actually looked thicker, id imagine breidis is quite a strong man. Gassiev is the strongest looking cruiserweight there is, but he is ****ing Huge.
