Is it a myth or a fact: Defensive fighters get hit less?

In wake of the tragic circumstances of Magomed Abdusalamov, there's been a lot of posters in this forum who have posted that a better defense could have saved him from a lot of the damage he suffered last Saturday night. While I do agree with this, I also think it's a bit of a myth that Defensive fighters get hit less, in fact I'd argue that a defensive fighter actually gets hit more.

Toney, Mayweather, Winky Wright to name a few, are all fairly defensive fighters who I believe get or got hit more than people think, simply because fighters want to penetrate their guards, granted most of the punches that do land are non-scoring punches, but I wouldn't necessarily say these punches don't have effect. In Mayweather's recent fight with Alvarez he said at some point in the fight he lost use of, I believe his left arm for a few rounds, I'd argue it was due to the many punches Alvarez landed on his elbows. Thoughts.

I think you can be good, but still get hit. The point I'm getting at is, defensive fighters get hit as much as, if not more than, a fighter who is less defensive.

No. It's perfectly sensible to assume that the more defensive the fighter, the less he gets hit, in general. Those whose focus is to not get hit, will not get hit as much as someone who's objective is to hit, as that is his central focus. Those who focus on X will generally be better at X.

You're not going to be regarded as a defensive fighter if you get hit more than the average of your weight class.

    That's common sense.

You can't tell me that Mayweather and Hopkins don't get hit a fraction as much as Jorge Arce did.

Good defensive fighters also limit the general output of their opponents.

Good defensive fighters also move with and partially deflect a lot of blows, which limits the torque of the landed punch.

ts, you are missing the point. Some guys defense is to slip punches but alot of times its just to catch or block punches. When those defensive specialist get hit, its mostly hitting there guard. Youre not going to die or have brain damage from blocking punches with your forearm. So what Canelo made Floyd's arm hurt. you think thats going to ruin his life? No, taking shots to your mug will

Mayweather does all he can do to not get hit but even he said that it´s impossible. You are going to get hit and sometimes you will have to be able to take a big shot.

Now a defencive fighter might get hit but he also could limit the damage.

I think that when Abdusalamov broke his wrist he was not able to punch as hard as he normally would, that could be one reason he got hit more often..........as hard punching most certainly can discourage an opponent..........

    @Badbot

Your last sentence was what I was getting at. I don't think defensive fighters get hit any less than a fighter who may be less defensive. The difference is the defensive fighter may get hit less CLEANLY, but still absorbs damage to his guard. Obviously his guard is more suited to absorb more punishment than his vital areas like his head or body, but it's all punishment just the same.

It's 'the same' in the way that a triple murder and speeding are both 'crimes'.

You could look at it in the way that a lot of the time aggressive pure offense fighters finish opponents early, so maybe take less punches due to their opponent not being there for those extra rounds to hit then back. But in a general sense obviously good defensive fighters will be hit less.

hit and don't get hit...that's the aim of boxing. the less punishment you take, the longer your career will be. they're getting hit far less than ppl think.

is this a serious question??? anyways........

elite defensive fighters rarely get touched...

good defensive fighters gets hit occasionally...

    bad defensive fighters gets knockout...

    i say its a myth....
