Is it acceptable to have Gennady Golovkin on the same list of the All Time Greats of boxing?

Yes I agree Golovkin definitely deserved something out of the trilogy vs Canelo, just because I question whether or not Golovkin's resume stands up to other great Middleweights. Trust me I'm not a hater or biased, I always call things fairly as i see it. And I agree Golovkin deserved the nod in the 1st Canelo fight, but I had no issues with Canelo winning fights 2 and 3. The 2nd fight was very close though, 115-113 either way or a draw is fair. In all honesty I think 2nd fight was more deserving of a draw than the 1st fight.

 

A win over Canelo is far better than a win over Derevyanchenko, so no it doesn't even itself out. Also, the ring side media had Golovkin winning the 2nd fight in a land slide, 30 for GGG 15 had it a draw, and two had it for Canelo. The commentators on hbo were ok with it, i think they thought it could go either way, Lederman had it 8-4 Golovkin, the british telecast had GGG winning. Maybe you watched the biased dazn edited version, wich didn't even exist when the fight happend.

 

I would be ok with a win and a draw for Golovkin, and in that case, he would still be champ today, with 24 title defenses, unless he lost his title to Derevyanchenko.

 

What are his best wins ?

 

I think jacobs is bigger and better than Kieth Holmes. I also think GGG would stop Kieth Holmes which Hopkins couldnt do.

 

Well I disagree I think Keith Holmes is more highly rated than Daniel Jacobs, and also achieved more than him aswell. As for whether or not Golovkin could stop Holmes, well that's debatable because Golovkin's best win is a close win over Jacobs. And I rate Holmes over Jacobs quite clearly, Holmes is also tall rangey Southpaw, I don't believe Golovkin stopped any Southpaws on the level of Holmes.

 

I just created a fantasy match up in classic forum Jacobs vs Holmes. So let's see how the boxing fans see it, and let's see if they see it your way or my way.

 

Then you know he was handled by the same promoters as Sturm inialy when in Germany & consequently avoided by their cash cow Sturm , when he was mandatory Sturm retired. He was then mandatory to fight Uk's Darren Barker , who became injured so he retired, word was they had to give Barker smelling salts to tell him nohe didn't have to get in the ring with GGG. So then ,as you say G- Man came to Freddie Roaches gym after signing with Loeffler & settled with Sanchez @ Big Bear, yes he started late but can only fight who they put in with you... remember how Eubanks Jnr collasped when it became real ...oh I mean the eubanks negotiations collasped. ( His made sure...again) ...

 

Unless you think Canelo won their second meeting, and most don't, GGG was (and is) the top dog at 160 from 2010 to the present.

During that time he beat everybody he faced, nearly all by KO, and I can't recall him ducking anybody.

Which other middleweight dominated the division for nearly 13 years ?

He lacks having a lot of ATG names on his resume, and he was not acknowledged for his best 'win.'

But he could only fight fighters who were there at the time and willing to fight him.


If he were to unify against Charlo at age 41 (not overly likely at this point)I think I would put him in the top ten of the MW division, which would qualify him as an ATG.

 

Was the Virgil Hill win as significant as Golovkins win or wins over Canelo?

Sadly no, loved watching his fights but he just doesn't have the resume.

 

Past prime he clearly beat a roided Canelo twice. Canelo markets well with the 12-18 year old demographic, manlovers, and casuals, but it doesn't make him a better or more worthy fighter.
