It depends. Is that personality carried into the ring? Then yes.

Take Mayweather for example. We know he’s a dickhead outside of the ring, but when it comes to doing business, he brings that dickheadedness with him; therefore I can’t help but let his personality skew my judgement of him.

But with someone like Brandon Rios - another dickhead outside of the ring – I have a different feeling towards him. Unlike Mayweather, his attitude towards boxing, for the moment, is a very fan-friendly one. He may be an immature, vulgar character, but you can bet your ass that he’ll be willing to fight anyone, anywhere.

If you are going to sell the fight by using a role like PBF does as a "arrogant champ", Mayorga "loud mouth instigator" or etc., then yes. The fighters opened the door, then don't complain when it backfires.

You can like and dislike anyone for whatever reason suits you. It's all fair game.

Me personally, I couldn't care less about personality. You can be the nicest guy to ever step foot in the squared circle, but if you run around the ring and clinch every opportunity you get then I'm definitely not gonna like you as a fan.... and quite frankly, I'm gonna be rooting for someone to knock your nice ass into retirement.

People who like or dislike fighters based on their personality are emotional bitches.

But when fighters use or create a personality to sell the fight, then they are asking the buying public to take that in to consideration. They WANT you to take that in to consideration.

The MASS audience will always take a bigger view than hardcore fans. Technical and physical prowess is not the end-all-be-all. If you don't want that kind of attention then don't pander to it.

And don't be ignorant. Boxing fans here eat up the stupid press conferences fights, the pre fight trash talking, and many of us take emotional side (Pac Vs PBF).

You make it sound like YOU are above it but you are obviously as involved at the emotional level as anyone just by the example of you last post let alone the others I have read.

Don't throw stones as they say.....

It's fair to judge his personality based on his personality.

There's only been one instance where I stopped being a fan of a fighter.

Let me expound in this a bit more. Professional athletes are paid premium because they are celebrities. Aside from their skill, they are paid more for their persona which includes their personality, true or otherwise. It's very hard to separate the two. There's more to this but I digress.

Gooners -- you're a great poster, but calling Ward a humble and down to earth guy stretches your credibility to the absolute limit.

You have to be naive to think fans don't take their personalities or out of ring actions into considerations. DO you think if Floyd acted and dressed like Urkal while keeping his skill level, would have all these idiot fanboys? Nope. Floyd's image is part of his selling point.
