Is it fair to say that Cruiserweight has largely been seen as a nothing division?

I'm not saying it's that the Yanks aren't good enough - although they aren't - I'm saying they're not big enough. The young American athletes that do have the size needed to compete prefer to move into American football these days. (Can't blame them - potential for a college scholarship as well as the golden carrot of the NFL.)

And to be fair, I've never said on here that the Klitschkos are oh so good are or all-time greats or anything. I just don't subscribe to the theory that "they're crap, they're boring, the heavyweight division needs saving" etc nonsense that you see.

In theory cruiserweight should be a great division. Big guys that are that little bit faster. The Cunningham/Hernandez fight displayed everything the division ought to be.

For whatever reason though it does struggle for quality and depth of quality, and even when there is that, it seems to get disrespected anyway.

 

Because they're still cutting, it's not really a 'small Heavyweight' division anymore.

Huck, not a brilliant fighter, showed last week you can be competitive enough to have a career at Heavy. I don't think the division serves much purpose other than to weaken the talent pool in one of boxings marquee divisions.

Louis fought in a different era though. I'm not proclaiming that today's heavyweights are better than Joe Louis, but there are some heavyweights out there that I think would prove just too big for him.

I thought Huck beat Povetkin to be honest, but Povetkin hasn't really progressed at all since the Chambers fight and if anything his conditioning seems to be worse. I'm not quite as convinced that Huck would have fared quite as well against Wladimir or Vitali. (That's not me blowing smoke up their arses just because I'm a fan. I think Huck could definitely rattle Wladimir's chin if he was able to connect clean, and Vitali isn't what he was once.) Having said that, the likes of Povetkin and Helenius have been given problems by smaller opponents and I'm not unconvinced that Huck, Hernandez and other cruiserweights wouldn't be able to beat them. It's about styles, attributes and game plans on the night as much as it is about size really.

There are going to be some cruiserweights that are just a bit too big to make 175lbs comfortably, but too small to really compete with guys that weigh in at anywhere from 240lbs upwards. I'd say the 190lbs cruiserweight limit made more sense than the 200lbs limit does really.
