For ages Cotto couldn't speak English and now it's still pretty poor so he probably doesn't even know what his opponent is saying.

I remember Mallinaggi having a go at Cotto in the build up to their fight and Cotto had that poker face but also looked slightly bemused as he obviously counldn't understand a word Paulie was saying.

 

Paulie did get under his skin some. He was teasing him at a presser the week of the fight, drinking bottled water and asking a visibily drained, dehydrated Miguel if he wanted a sip. Cotto looked pissed . Sometime during the build up, he told Paulie when he was finished with him, he'd be back to fighting in clubs and ballrooms. And I'll be damned if Paulie's next fight wasn't in a ballroom. After the fight was over and the decision was announced, he started pointing to his belt and screaming at Paulie "It's still here, it's still here!"

 

Recently Cotto revealed that he was able to understand and speak English all these years, but elected not to do so because he was embarrassed about the quality of his language skill. He learned English in school growing up. He could understand Malignaggi.

If everyone understood Spanish and Cotto didn't have to learn English he would ****ing humiliate people if he could just speak spanish. Cotto has a VERY strong character, If you think that comes across when he is all nice and polite speaking english, that ain't nothing when you hear him speak spanish. And if he was able to speak in spanish the majority of the time and everyone understood, he'd come across as a completely different person.

 

Cotto would never lose his cool or his composure over the immature bull**** Floyd likes to pull off. Getting under someones skin isn't too hard to do, but getting them to act out of character or lose their cool is, ESPECIALLY Cotto.

 

Cotto is just a humble great guy, you simply CAN'T dislike him even if you tried.
