Is it just me or did Lennox Lewis seem to gas in a lot of fights?

You cant take anything away from what Lennox Lewis accomplished. Im not sure if it was because he was a heavyweight or what, but every fight i watched of his, he always seemed to gas after the second round. It clearly didnt cause him much of a problem due to his astonishing career but did anyone else notice this? Or was he merely playing possum?

I don't think so he was coming on strong round 6 against vitali, vitali was clinging on for dear life last minute of round 6.

What do we think about the Mavrovic fight in regards to this? I "reckon it" one of the more difficult of his career.

Without a doubt, however it takes more gas to punch and miss then punch and land. He was finding the target a lot against Mavrovic, it motivated and controlled him to maintain a steady pace similar to the Vitali fight. But in a lot of his fights he seems sluggish and slow.

He wasn't in the best shape for Vitali, but he wasn't gassing out... as already been said, he was turning the tide in that fight before the stoppage.

he could switch off and slow down resulting in kds, but then turn it back up when he needed too, wouldnt say he gassed but a tough pressure fighter with skills would make it hard work for lewis. ie: not tua.

Lennox had one big problem He tended to train haphazardly for fights he knew in his mind he could win.
He never too McCall seriously he lost focus & McCall caught him with a lucky shot. Look close you'll see Oliver's eyes were closed when he swung that punch.
With Rahman, Lennox had been filming Oceans Eleven with Clooney & Pitt he wasnt training hard plus he was late getting to Africa didnt have time to accumulate to the thin air. He really struggled in that fight. Rematch was vintage Lennox though.
When 100% Lennox was a monster the best HW champ since Ali

His conditioning wasn't always top notch.

Also, Lennox just tended to alternate between exploding with awe inspiring barrages of punches and then sitting back to box patiently if the other guy survived, lending itself to the impression he boxed.

Lewis gassed out in many of his fights, esp. in the fight with Vitali Klitschko Lewis was done for. Lewis turned down a $50,000,000 payday for a rematch, but Lewis knew he would lose. Hell, for $50,000,000 I would fight Godzilla..................Mercer gave Lewis all he could handle, split decision. Lewis held on to Tua in their fight. Mavrovich kicked Lewis' arse and he was sick and small...............

5lbs? Really he weighted 256.5 lbs against Vitali and 246.5lbs against Rahman the second time so that isn't 5lbs, that's 10lbs. :-(

As for your unfounded roid rage comment, that's funny when you consider he was fighting Vitali who admitted use of steroids. :patsch

Lewis was never the most consistent fighter, his rematches against Holyfield, McCall and Rahman showed this. He needed to feel under threat to get the best of him otherwise he could show up unprepared or out of shape.

So yes there were fights when his stamina could have been better though I think he only ever really gassed during the Vitali fight but that was also partly due to the pace that Vitali set. Even in shape he would have struggled to match Vitali for his work rate.

Excuses. Watch the first McCall fight Oliver was hitting him at will since the opening bell. In the Rahman fight Lennox didn't care to defend himself and payed dearly.
