It seems that without the right connections and trainers you get nowhere, especially if you live outside the US

Without connections it's hard to get anywhere in any major sport what the framework isnt correct.

Know a few footballers who could have made it, but by the time a scout found them alcohol beat them to it.

I beleive he also means dedication when he says talent, I think he is talking about the fact you can be a top, highly skilled boxer, but if you aren't marketable or dont have the right shady promoter, you can be avoided, ducked, never put in the right fights, robbed and generally have your career come to nothing compared to what it should

So yes, it is the only sport that works like that

Other sports tend to have a built-in system where talent is discovered and promoted. High school star athletes become college star athletes who become pros. Pro boxing is a business first. You can be a Golden Glove champion and still struggle to find promotion if your style isn't exciting, or if you're some ugly f*ck who won't bring in dollars.

nope, and not only in boxing.

You need more then talent. You need dedication, exposure, luck, and brains if you want to get to the very top.

You can't do nothing with talent if your a clueless shithead who can't keep himself out of trouble, or you're unknown.

That's available in all sports not only boxing.

True, but I think he's inferring that unlike team sports obscure talent can remain obscure for longer periods of time.

    Your being difficult

Either way, the reason this happens is because boxing is a sport where the competitors aren't in a league, they aren't forced to face eachother, unlike other sports that largely avoid the problems a lot of boxers face

If you're a redheaded Mexican with decent talent, you can write your own checks.
