...does boxing, now for some time, lack competitive fights. There are a bunch of match-up's that look to take place at even terms but most of the time people see a blowout. Since 2004, more and more fights are either showcase or unthinkable blowouts at the highest level. Seldomly, we could witness fights like Pacman vs. JMM. When looking back in time (and that is on my PC as I am actually just 26 years of age), it seems that there were far more close fights at the elite level than today... Am I the only one to see it this way or is anyone else experience the same progression?
Hey, I am accustomed to a lot of fighters being protected in Germany since the days of Henry Maske but the US always had something to offer - still there isn't much more today when looking across the pond...the UK always has or had some to offer that entertains me but the big fights worldwide today most often look like mis-matches when their really unfold before our eyes...
I agree Tom. Sorry for trying to stoke the fire there :yep Anyhow I agree with you..It always seems to be some rising star vs. a cabdriver that took the fight on a weeks notice....It sucks....and we have to search abit to find fights that prove your thread wrong but there are infact plenty of them
I agree .... I think for the most part guys are staying in the game for too long and not leaving any room for the young up and comers to make a name for themselves.
It's just the policy these days. Most if not all fighters will look towards the lowest risk/best reward fight. I wouldn't say complete blow-outs, but the large majority can predict the outcome of the fight. Like Mosley-Mayorga for example, probably 80%+ picked Mosley, and occassionally the other fight will do a bit better than expected, like Mayorga, but the outcome was never really in doubt.
I think your perspective might be a bit off because you are such a big fan of the MW division. Personally, I think we've had some very good fights in the last year or so, better than in the last half a year before that, but not that many in the MW division, save Pavlik v. Taylor.
I am a fan of all boxing, except for the ultra-low weights (aka everything under Super Flyweight). I really think that match up-wise boxing has really regressed...
Difference is that I often go to boxing events and watch 8-9 fights - plus nearly every week, I watch 3-4 fights from oversea - maybe it's the overkill, maybe not...
Maybe, but if you consider the top guys, they are fighting each other more this year than they did at the beginning of last year! (I've only been a fan since then), no? Maybe it's me getting more excited about more fighters!
