Is it normal/good for coaches to yell at people?

That totally depends on the person who is being yelled at. Great coaches and trainers in any sport are great because they know their athlete(s).

One guy in the gym may crawl up into a ball and just want to go home if you yell at him. A better idea is the arm around the shoulder and tell him you know he can do it for a guy like him.

Others, will react like "Yeah? **** you, I'll show you who's ****!" And that attitude then brings the best out of some such people. So, sometimes you got to be nasty to be nice.

That stands for any sport and quite probably any walk of life.
    Knowing the person is key

If you don't like being yelled at, you're really not going to like getting punched in the face.
Yeah, I heard someone tell a story here once about how the gym he went to would throw new guys into the ring the first time they were there and break their nose for them. If you came back, you were serious, and they'd teach you. Seemed like an older fellow. Not sure that would fly today. #metoo #allsnowflakesarespecial

Depends on the context, if its a fighter with a long and trusted history with a REAL trainer, yeah.
If its some half arsed know it all wanker just trying to big him self up in front of others no.
Check out his history, boxing is one sport where someone can walk into a gym with a towel around his shoulders n call himself a coach, its full of wannabes.
Id be cautious, its not the army.

Absolutely, one of England’s greatest Cricket captains Mike Brearley wasn’t a very good cricketer but his man management was said to be 1st class,in the now famous Bothams ashes where England pulled off a ridiculous victory against Australia,Brearley famously wound Botham up on purpose to get him ticking whilst at the other end his other fast bowler Bob Willis who was prone to self doubt needed an arm round the shoulder and reminding him how good he was and between the two it worked perfectly as Willis tore in and bowled super fast and botham cleaned up.
Good example of man management, some guys have a problem with authority but seriously I don’t have a problem with the time honoured way of seeing if youngsters have it or not like Emanuel Stewards story of seeing a young lanky kid called Thomas Hearns walk into the gym and getting his nose rearranged first day and seeing him come back for more.

Emanuel Steward did the very same thing to one Thomas Hearns lol and he did come back.
Nobody likes bullies and one particular idiot I know who even now at 42 acts like a bully, well a friend of mine told me a story about when they were kids he took him to the gym with him to show him some boxing and the lad just cried when hit and didn’t want to give it back.
I’m complete opposite in that I’ve never been bullied but would be terrified in a real fight but I loved it In the ring with gloves on,total state of m mind thing.
What happened to the bully you may ask?he was working at the same foundry I was at as a labourer and was bullying a guy who had the mental age of a ten yr old which didn’t go down well.so at dinner time my mate said “I’ve done the deed” which I wasn’t sure about, anyway at shower time he gets dressed and put his foot into his shoe which had been nicely warmed up with a big sloppy poo at which point he presumed it was the lad he bullied who’d done it and chased the fully naked lad next door into the offices where the boss was in the middle of securing a big deal with some Americans lol,you could hear the office women screaming and the boss shouting you’re fired lol.

Who knows had he got into boxing it may of stopped him becoming a bully.

I think it depends on the context, perhaps the kid lacks the mentality for a boxer. Sometimes yelling at someone can bring up some angry purpose in them. I'm old but in my day you would get cuffed around the ears if you didn't listen or got distracted. I have also know kids to learn a few moves then think they are gods gift to boxing, bringing them down to earth a bit rarely bruises anything more than their pride (and saves the lesson delivered by another boxer!).

Yeah interesting stuff fellas, it sounds a bit like that is the culture for boxing gyms or a technique used to motivate certain fighters. I actually remember that Thai boxer Buakaw post years ago that he could ''tolerate hard training but not hard treatment'' and walked out over some problem with his trainers. But then again he is a world class fighter and I don't know the specifics of it, just remembering that now.

Chucking guys in and breaking their nose is ****ing dumb though, I can't support that. Yelling at people you might get past but breaking their nose on day one? what kind of psycho does that to people? not everyone wants to be a world champion fighter, a lot of people want self defense and to preserve their health, not wreck it. Never seen a gym like that and I don't want to tbh.
