To be fair Foster was just a neophyte when he lost to Jones. It was stupid management to throw in a young light-heavyweight with Terrell, a 6'6 heavyweight contender.

True,Im just pointing out that Foster didn't fare well against heavyweights of class,it wasn't just Ali and Frazier that were stumbling blocks. Foster is comfortably in my top 4:good

no way, he was a outstanding lhw, but it was much much harder for lhws to move up in those days due to the quality at hw

I think Foster is slightly over-rated. He was the Tommy Hearns of the light heavies if you will, but his competition was not as great as Hearns was in his primary divison.

In terms of who he defeated I do not see top 5 ATG. Tiger is a great win on paper until you see he was 38 years old. The KO of Mike Quarry ( Jerry brother ) was a scary one. I double dare those who have not seen to take a look. Mike was okay at the end.

In terms of who I think he would beat, I just don't trust him vs light heavies who had good chins and also had power.

In terms of how he would do vs run in the mill average contenders, Foster among the greatest.

    Top 6-9 for me.

He never lost to a LT heavy in his prime but I don't think he ever beat a top 10 hwt. He is a top 10 ATG LT heavy although sitting here I can't think of 5 LT heavy champions that would beat him. Possibly Moore...I think he destroys Conn.

No at all. He was the only guy that cut Ali so he's easily in the top 10 hardest punchers of all time.

I guess I'm a little surprised at how many are saying he's not overrated because of what a beast he was in his time, but that's cool. Answers, one way or another, were all I was looking for.

For me, I just can't get past the weak resume at LHW. Compared to a Charles, Conn, Moore, even Greb who never held the title at 175, his list of scalps just doesn't cut it. Easier to look like a complete beast against Andy Kendall or Tommy Hicks than what we see in other's resumes.

I can't really comment about where to rank him as I tend not to do that, but I certainly wouldn't put him in a "Tier 1" of that division.

    He was a 'greenie' then...
Basically his only losses at heavy were Frazier & Ali, nothing to be ashamed of there.
That jab may have been THE best in the light heavy division; that left hook was mind numbing and his right packed a wallop as well.
Top ten LH? Give me a break! He's on the extreme short list of all time great LH's.
And...Eddie Gregory is STILL a better fighter than Michael Spinks. :D

And Bob cut Ali; wasn't that the only time he got 'sliced'?

My dad who was only 2 years younger than Joe Louis said that Fosters ko of Mike Quarry was the most brutal he'd ever seen

It was one of the more brutal ones I've seen, no doubt.

If ever fighters had too much bottle it was the Quarry's.

I use to rate him number one based on how I thought he would match up h2h, but you simply can't use that criteria only. Still a top 5 for me though.

it's a lot easier to give the benefit of the doubt to a guy who fought in a weaker era than a guy who has a weak resume due to not fighting everyone.

anyone claiming he's easily the goat lhw is overating him, beyond that things are arguable.

Ali once lost an amateur match on a cut. Didn't someone else cut him as a pro besides Foster?
