Is it possible for anybody to ever be as good as SRR?

It can be done. I read the thread and did not understand it too much, but I then looked up SRR. Yes, he had 200 or 203 fights, but look at how many fights he took a year. I counted 13 on some years with some very poor opposition. He fought alot of the same guys over and over. He even fought guys with 0-0-0 after certain big fights. Alot of good and great fighters pad their records, but if you look at Oscar's resume, he fought good opposition and moved up quickly disposing of good fighters and becoming a champion very quickly. Yes, I know the money Oscar recieved at his early career outweighs SSR's purse, but a lot of the past era fought each other numerous times. Boxing back then was hotter and the mob had there hands in deep to pull-off boxing shows weekly or bi-weekly adding to all these long resumes of past fighters. The eras cannot be compared in my opinion. Throw RJJ or SRL at SRR to see if they would not beat him. Oscar and Roy have nothing else to prove. Again, I am confused about what you guys are discussing, but if it has to do with 50 fights over 200 fights...the eras speak for themselves. If I am way off, my apologies.

i dont think its possible...no fighter fights that much anymore. By the point where a fighter gains great prominence, he fights at the most twice a year against decent comp. You start making 10 mill a fight, you dont want to get your head pounded in 10 times a year.

check this out...say Mayweather does the following, beats:

*goes back to lightweight and beats Pac
    *beats Campbell
    *beats Casa
    *beats JMM
    *beats Witter at 140
    *beats Cotto at 147
    *beats Margo at 147
    *beats Mosley at 147
    *beats Beats DLH at 154
    *beats Forrest at 154
    *beats Pavlik at 160

does that and retires at 50-0

would you put his atg best? I bet most won't. They'll say he's retiring in order to avoid Berto, Khan, Peterson, or whoever else comes up in the ranks.

If Mayweather did what you just said (it won't happen, but for speculation purposes), I'd say he'd have to be considered the greatest fighter of all time.

Although Muhammad Ali is always oddly left out of the discussion for the P4P 1# spot. And Henry Armstrong always deserves recognition as one of the good ones.:bbb

It's not impossible, it's just not economical.

I'll argue until I die that the era of SRR is VASTLY overrated. Huge fight fixing going on and just as many if not more tomato cans and **** fighters who claimed to be good.

SRR was great, but there honestly is no way to know if he could compete in todays era. It's easy to diss on the current, and then overrate the past.

    A fine example.

Although in beating everybody, he would probably look better, if you see what I mean. But you are right, that type of thing needs to be weighed.

If Oscar won every single one of his big fights, he would have a very good case.

If Floyd fought every single guy out there, he would have a case. Just imagine he beat Hatton at 140lb when he was kingpin and then add in the names: Casamayor, freitas, Kostya Tsyzu, Shane Mosley, Cotto, Margarito, Spinks(at 154) and retire undefeated. IMO, he would undoubtedly greatest of all time.

If Hearns won all of his fights you have the GOAT right there, or even if he jut beat Leonard and Hagler 2 out of 3.

That argument would make sense if we are rating every single past fighter over current fighters but thats not the case. In this case we are rating 1 guy in he span of 110years pro boxing history, SRR just happens to exist in between that 100 years. Its not siding with the past cos what do you consider the past? If its older than 10 years then its choosing between 100 years worth of fighters or 10 years worth of fighters, more than likely you'll find the best guy over the span of 100 as naturally, its a longer period of time to choose from.

as a person wins fights though, people lose track of the context. If 5 years ago, we said that floyd beat the undisputed champs of 140, 147 and beat DLH at 154, people would call us nuts. Now, people say he just beats bums.
