Is it possible Monzon is overrated ? S.I. Vault article rips him ..

    Totally agree .. Monzon actually had a autobiography released but it has only been published in Spanish .. I have no idea how accurate it is or if he even had any real interaction with it but sure wish it was translated .. I've read that he was a very dark guy outside the ring .. that he had over forty arrests that extended thru his run as champ, that he pimped women as well .. the guy was complex .. he hung out with European playboys as easily as street guys from the poor sections of Santa Fe .. Griffith was quoted as saying Monzon was a real mofo out of the ring, a very nasty guy although they finally chilled it out .. wonder if it had to do w Emile's homosexuality ..

    I agree but that is why that article intrigued me .. the guy was a long term writer, had no personal animosity and just reported his first hand impression from seeing the guy live in his only US ring appearance .. he's entitled to his opinion ..

    Ya I hear ya.... I really do not care who the writer was. It simply was an ignorant statement that he made not based on opinion just factually incorrect

    I think the writer was Mark Kram, as there was a thread of this same theme several years ago, and that information about the writer was revealed...and all I can say is, never trust the judgement of anyone whose last name is spelled as the reverse of his first name.

    The guy was one of Sports Illustrated's top writers for twenty years. I really don't think he wrote anything derogatory , he just wasn't impressed .. the only add I can guesstimate was that Monzon was notoriously unfriendly to press and perhaps when he won the fighte of the year and then in his NY appearance leading up to the fights maybe his behavior was insulting .. we certainly know today how despicable an agenda driven press can be ..

    If you look at anyones career they can be overrated. Also underrated. That era was very deep. His record speaks for itself.

    Same to you. Happy T giving to you also Your posts are better than mine that is for sure. I am a rambler. I was never a good writer, and my posts show this. I have to try and make them understandable. Recently, I have to proof read what I write because I skip words. Oh getting old is great.
