Is it possible one day we will look at Calzaghe legacy much like Larry Holmes today?

Sure he was how ever old , but don't we all think he retired a year or two too soon. Which hurts his legacy at least at the moment. Its all too bad as I think he could take any of the super 6.

I'm not even a Calzaghe fan. I'm just asking if it's possible that one day people may look back fondly on Joe's legacy the way we look at Holmes. When Holmes was at his peak everyone questioned his comp, even though he fought the best that was available at the time. I don't he really received his due till he came out of retirement and started putting a whompin' on the youngins in boxing that he earned his respect and showed that he was great all along, it just the comp wasn't there at his prime.

Now I don't Joe will ever do the same thing that Larry accomplished, seeing how he did everything in his power to avoid comp his entire career. I'm just saying do you think his career will mirror that of Holmes in hindsight, or is the comparison way off base?

Papp is one of the great "what ifs" to me. Who knows what he could have been if not for the political situation that he lived under.

No, Larry still tested himself against arguably the biggest puncher in history in Shavers.....twice. Also he was the man at his division for years beating a good name in Cooney who beat Young, Norton, and Lyle(guys that gave ATG's in Ali & Foreman fits). Then after his reign despite his shot stage he fought prime,ATG's in Tyson & Holyfield. He also beat Mercer sometime between then. Needless to say, he ranks much higher than Calzaghe and wasn't spoonfed chumps most of his career. Don't get me wrong, beating Kessler and Lacy was very good but nothing on what Holmes has done.

Not likely, because Holmes was the better/greater fighter.

But I will say this, Holmes gets cut a lot of slack for some of the HWs he failed to meet (or rematch), as well as his cherry picking toward the end of his title reign.

Zaggers is an ATG and also happens to be the Goodwill Ambassador of boxing's number one organisation of experts - Team Elite.

I think a fighters 0 shows lack of opposition. T all time great fighter, they all lost and most of the times those losses defined them.

Holmes won his title against Norton. Beat Cooney. Fought better guys and probably better skills. I am a guy who defends Calzaghe as a HOF fighter and he beat good guys, but his resume is not a Larry Holmes resume.
