Simple enough question. Do the two first round knockout loses cancel out Patterson's perhaps more extensive achievements before an after facing Liston? I torn myself.

Not really. Liston's wins over Patterson are better than any wins Patterson has himself, Patterson has more losses, there is a comparable amount of time between each meeting their first and last contenders, Liston was more dominant and looks better on film.

There are one or two guys going around who rank Patterson higher based upon their "systems", but it's mostly bull****.

Of course, it's your list and you can do what you like with it, but you know it's always going to seem odd.

Yes, at heavyweight, for me. P4P it's not even a question Patterson's higher.

Definitely not at Heavyweight. Anyone who says otherwise is obviously an SNV fan. Taking into account poundage, I'd say so. He was a bad mamma-jamma at Lt. Heavy. Would've been one of the best of all time had he stayed there. A combination-punching machine.

If there was no Sonny Liston or Muhammad Ali, Floyd would have taken the title into 1966.

A monumental achievement for a guy with a fragile chin.

    Not at HW.....p4p yes....

But.....Because of the size diference between the two, the two losses against Liston doesn´t discredit Patterson at HW to me......he deserves credit for taking the fight against a completely wrong style for him......with a HUGE size and weight disadvantage.....Brave man !

And, in the same tought in my opinion about Liston I have to say....I dont give much credit for beating Patterson in his resume.....because of the size disadvantage like I said before.....

No way in the world you can rate Floyd over Sonny - the facts are the facts they fought twice and both times Sonny bombed Patterson out in the first round - if Tyson rematched Spinks and Tyson knocked him out in 91 seconds again would you rate Spinks over Mike?? It would be ludicrous

but when they fought it was no-contest both times - Floyd didn't even belong in the same ring as Liston??? That blows any logic out of the water??

If Floyd Patterson was rated above Sonny Liston, then would that mean
Ingemar Johansson would be just a tad below Sonny Liston.......???

You could make a case. Patterson had a much longer run at the top, picked up some great wins, and had many more great performances.

    Patterson:

    Moore
    Ingo x2
    Machen
    Boneava
    Chuvalo

    Liston:

    Pattersonx2
    Foley
    Machen
    Williams

    Agreed,

It would be very difficult to argue against this. About the best one can do is rate them closely together, but I can't see Floyd rating above him. I have both men rated somewhere between 10-15, with Liston being the slightly higher of the two.
