    Floyd Patterson,,,,,,,

Is a Champion who loses points for the obvious Top-fighters he avoided while
champion, but gains points for the Top-fighters he fought after losing the title.

    One tough guy to rate.....

    Santo Amonti (47-4-3)
    Eddie Machen (47-4-2)
    Charlie Powell (25-9-3)
    George Chuvalo (29-8-2)
    Tod Herring (26-3-0)

    Thats an excellent 5-win package.

I rate Liston over Patterson, but I like this thread cause it really makes you wonder.

    Here's a ****** wrench;

What if Patterson got the decision wins over Ellis and Quarry?

Would the added depth in his resume give him the edge?

i still rate frazier above foreman even though foreman bombed frazier out twice.

    I C,

A win over Jerry Quarry in 1967, puts Floyd in the ring with Thad Spencer.
Now, that would have been a good fight.

Wonder what path Floyd would have taken, if he had gotten the deserved win over
    Jimmy Ellis in December 1968.

1969;..Maybe Oscar Bonavena, Bob Foster, Buster Mathis, Sonny Liston or The Great "Dave Zyglewicz"

It certainly couldn't have hurt him, especially if he ended up getting a third world title out of the deal.

On a h2h list Liston would be considerably higher. When it comes to greatness not so much. I think higher of Patterson and less of Liston than most on here.

Floyd really needed one more good win, over a Top 5 opponent.

Zora Folley, Cleveland Williams or Ernie Terrell,

I think he probably could have beaten all of those guys, but for some reason those fights were never made, either because the timing wasn't right or maybe his people steared clear of them.. Don't really know for sure...

styles make fights and Liston had Patterson's number, same with pressure fighters like Frazier and Norton against Ali.... Patterson had a good post title fight resume with close fights against Ali,Quarry,Ellis,Bonavena and learned to relax better in the ring with age. Still Liston had dominating wins over Floyd and fought a lot of fighters in the top 10 coming up, I rate Liston higher than Patterson but Floyd is still close to the top 15 or so...quick hands and power...Floyd was a good heavy

I deservedly have Liston one place over Patterson at #14 to Floyds #15. Liston is the thorn in pattersons resume. For what ever reason Floyd could never perform against Liston and that makes Liston look supersonic- even though later on patterson handled the required tactics to trouble Liston against chuvalo and bonavenna. Liston certainly did not face the Floyd those two did. Having said that Archie Moore was also very poor against Floyd so it is close. Both would feature very high on a list of champions who beat fighters performing below par to win the title.

    No freakin' way.
    Floyd Patterson.
Didn't really prove himself in his reign, won a vacant title from the light-heavyweight champion Archie Moore (who'd been mashed by Marciano and was starting to avoid top 175-pounders himself), avoided Machen and Folley in their primes and defended against guys like Peter Rademacher and Brian London, got BRUTALLY clobbered by Johansson. Did well to win the title back from Johansson, then got battered by Liston in 1 round (and repeat), Liston had already been fighting and beating guys that Patterson should have been fighting.

After losing to Liston, Patterson finally fought and beat Machen who had been very ill in a mental hospital in the months before they fought, then Floyd barely got past Chuvalo, then he got thoroughly outclassed by Ali.

I don't think his fights with Quarry were robberies, I don't think his loss to Ellis was any more contentious than his win over Bonavena.

Patterson was an attractive fighter to watch, and a tremendously humble and classy guy.
But he was one of the lesser heavyweight fighters to ever hold the championship.

I thought floyds bonavena win was clear. He handled ringo far beter than Frazier and (an albeit rusty) ali did.

    Floyd Patterson 'losses' that shouldn't have been;

vs. Joey Maxim (One of the worst decisions ever)
vs. Jerry Quarry I (The Draw, despite '2' Knockdowns in Round 2)
vs. Jerry Quarry II (At worst, it could have been scored a Draw)
vs. Jimmy Ellis (At worst, it could have been scored a Draw)
