Is it ridiculous that Ring ranks Nigel Benn the 91st greatest puncher ever?

Think you might be giving them too much credit surf.

Look at where guys like Graz are placed.I think it's just a typically ill-thought out list from the ring of recent years.

You may be right. Personally, I thought that it was a great list overall and a great read. Most of the right names were there. There were some glaring omissions like Aurelio Herrera, Dal Hawkins and Lem Franklin, but it was still stacked pretty well.

But like you, I did have a problem with the placements of several fighters and Rocky Graziano's placement was ridiculous to me as well.

When you said Benn only "showed power early on against stiffs", I think it's fair of me to ask how you qualify his later KO of a top fighter like McClellan. The tragic results of that fight doesn't make the question less valid.

I like you as a poster, but I don't like how you worded that reply one bit.

I don't think it's fair to bring up the McClellan fight. Even if we ignore the tragic result, it was Benn's persistence and McClellan's lack of stamina that won him the bout, not his one punch power. Benn landed plenty of hard, clean blows on McClellan without hurting him. It was only in the late rounds when McClellan was completely spent that he was able to floor him for the stoppage. This goes in line with most of Benn's fights at 168 lbs, he usually went the distance or stopped his opponents in the late rounds after a consistent battering, not the result of a one punch knockout.

This just reminded me of when I argued about Primo Carnera's punching ability with other posters. I feel it would have been a bit tasteless to bring up the Ernie Schaaf fight as proof of his power.

Sure. This is an opinion. But you can voice it without trying make me out as someone who tries to make light of McClellan's tragedy. His name was just so obviously missing that it seemed natural to pose the question.

For my part, I think Benn showed some really sharp and powerful punching there. If it takes him above place 91 among punchers is another question. He surely was a more powerful puncher than some of those placed above him, but not necissarily a more accurate or effective one.

BEnn was actually pretty small at 168 and moved up for more opportunities they originally wanted to put him in for a 154lb title when he was at 160lb from what I've read

Because the evidence suggests that Fitzsimmons hit way, way harder than Tua, compared to the fighters of his time and in his weight class. Tua was a very good hw puncher in his era. Fitzsimmons was a ridiculously exceptional puncher at numerous weights in his era.
