Is it time we start viewing Canelo as a future ATG?

I've spent the last few years thinking he's an over paid diva, but his record speaks for itself.

I mean yeah the fights with Lara, Trout and Golovkin were all close and debatable for the other guy. I personally scored both Golovkin bouts to GGG, but they were both fights that can be debated for Canelo.

The way I see it, he was without doubt the best LMW on the planet. He's twice gone in with the best MW on the planet and emerged with a 1-0-1 record. He's probably going to spark out Fielding and would anyone put it past him to then beat Smith and unify a third division?

If that happens he's a three weight unified champ and I think at that point we have to consider his future standing.

I feel due to the close nature of some of his fights he gets under rates in a historical sense, but there are very few "divas" through history who have consistently fought the best fighters. Yeah there's a few soft touches in there but by and large he's fought everyone we would have wanted him to. If he keeps winning we surely have to see him as a potential ATG right?

    Am I right here?

Many ATG fighters have been accused of PEDS and what not, Canelo won't be the first nor will he be the last.

I personally don't think he's a dirty fighter, I think he ate tainted beef, entirely his fault but I don't believe he cheats.

You're right but Canelo is the farthest thing from a diva. Not only has he saught out the best, but he conceded weight and gave into Mayweather and Cotto's catchweight demands to make those fights. And he fought Khan at 155 instead of the full 160 which made it more fair to Khan.

Canelo continues to dare to be great he is the people's champion. He came from nothing and has become the biggest star in boxing. He's a fighter that everybody can respect and support. Canelo is the best thing to happen to boxing in a long time, we as fans are the winners to have this incredible champion at the top of the sport.

No ATG is a high standard. And he vacated his title to duck a prime Golovkin.

It will be hard to come back from that legacy wise.

A true ATG does not surrender his belt to his biggest threat and then come back years after hes declined and then fight him.

With the way the sport ignores doping, yes he'll probably go down as a great like others with that taint next to their legacy, like Toney, RJJ, Holyfield, Mosley, Mayweather etc.

I personally thought he beat Golovkin in both fights as well as beat Lara and Trout, but I doubt he breaks into anyone's top 50 ATG list. But he'll definitely be remembered as a great of his era.

It's gonna be one of those that people debate over but tbh he's like 28, by the time his career is done he's likely gonna rack up a few more decent wins to do so.

On paper he's near there, resume of GGG, Lara, Trout, Cotton, Mosley, Kirkland, Smith, Khan etc.

Personally I don't have him there though, imo he lost to GGG x2, Trout and Lara and has failed a drug test. That'll likely all get forgotten.

I'm hoping the next few years sees him fight a trilogy with GGG, Jacobs/Derevyanchenko, Andrade and then maybes goes after a belt at SMW (Smith/Benevidez/Zurdo/Uzcategui) would all be quality wins.

He can deco do it and probably will should be people be of the opinion he won those fights or were close enough to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Authentic ATGs overturn disputed decisions with a clearer win in the rematch and thats exactly what he done against the bigger harder hitting Golovkin.
He's already there as we speak and his case can only get stronger as time goes on. :sisi3::wink:

He then fought Golovkin twice so that pretty much makes up for it imo

No because it was the wrong version of Golovkin.

He robbed GGG twice pretty much according to 75 percent of boxing experts and fans. Had a questionable decision win against Lara.
If not for DLH he would be a solid B+ fighter, who looses every time he steps up with losses to Floyd, GGG and possibly even Lara.
