Is it time we start viewing Canelo as a future ATG?

    imo, no.

For me to consider him a great, he would have to actually rule middleweight.... clean it out to the best of his abilities and then sit atop the throne for a bit. If he did that, then yes Id personally consider him a great fighter.

Right now he falls short. But thats just imo.

Well Canelo beat Cotto in 2015 right? So within the next year would have been perfect, but as I said instead it ended up being the year after. I can't find too much fault there tbh.

I didn't consider Canelo that elite at the time, just exoectee Golovkin to walk through him.

I agree right now he isn't at that level.

But I think he's only a couple of victories away.

ATGs win fights by themselves and not with help of their promoters. Is Canelo great? Of course not, just a solid fighter with an iron chin, who only needs to make it close to get a UD.

Sure, he's some kind of ATG. Everybody who makes it into the top ten p4p of their decade is an ATG. But there's still a difference between being the number 1 guy of your decade like Robinson, Duran, Leonard or being the number ten guy like Terry Norris or Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. Since I think Canelo has lost every time he stepped up Floyd, Lara, GGG x2, it's hard to make a case for him being high up in the pack. Without a non-controversial signature win he's going to have a hard time winning accolades. I thought Lara was the best at 154, GGG was the best at 160, and Fielding isn't #1 at 168; so we'll wait and see how he does there.

This. After the Cotto fight he should've stepped up to the plate and fought GGG back then. Beating GGG in 2016 would've been more impressive.

Also, Canelo only won one of the fights with GGG and should have a loss in first fight instead of the draw he was gifted.

GGG never came close to beating Canelo "clearly". The first fight at best you could argue he edged it with activity, though we both know GGG got outboxed round after round and took more damage from those well placed counters. In the rematch he was simply outpunched and reduced to a jabber.

The history books will show that Canelo dethroned Golovkin from his perch atop the Middleweights. Canelo conquered Golovkin over 24 rounds and now he's the Middleweight King ! I know it stings you to read that and I know how hard it is for you to accept that, but that's what happened.

As to Mayweather, Lara and Trout, he came out of each of those fights better than he went in to them. In the loss to Mayweather, he showed he can compete at the highest level and gave Floyd a chess match and a challenge that Floyd never had experienced before. Many people said after the Mayweather fight how impressed they were with Canelo. He beat Trout pretty clearly when you factor in the knockdown. Lara was closer but Canelo still fought well. I mean when you fight top guys like that, many fighters would crumble but Canelo rose to the occasion each time.

Even if Canelo didn't get the decision against Lara, for example, it wouldn't really change the way fans view Canelo. He still landed some good punches on Lara, even if he was outlanded, he definitely a showed a lot of his skills in that fight, that's what you need to focus on, what he actually did in each of those fights instead of just complaining about the judges. Canelo isn't the only fighter who's had controversial decisions. It's no big mystery why several of Canelo's fights are so hotly debated : Canelo's skills produce hard to score rounds because he's such a technician in there. For you to basically act like Canelo isn't that talented or whatever you think and just wins rounds by showing up well it's played out and you come across as a really big hater.

Several months ago I said CJ that I agree with many of your posts, but when it comes to Canelo you just lose all sense of reality. It's obvious that you , like Paulie Disco Man Malignaggi, just have something against Canelo, some sort of envy complex whatever it is. I think you need to re-evaluate how you view Canelo beacuse you are way off base in regard to him.

2016 would have been better, but 2017 was still a huge fight.

Yep and middleweight wise I don't like his chances against the top middleweight of yesteryear h2h either.

He's 0-2 against a faded Golovkin and got whitewashed by a welterweight.

He's 0-2 vs Golovkin ? "whitewashed by a welterweight"? lol I bet you wouldn't like his chances vs top middleweights of yesteryear h2h if you didn't think he beat Golovkin.

If you aren't impressed with how Canelo dispatched of Golovkin over 24 rounds then you must not appreciate the kind of talent and skills that go into being a great all around fighter. I mean Canelo boxed Golovkin's socks off in the first fight but then when the fans craved a toe-to-toe war he gave the fans that in the rematch. Not only did Canelo beat Golovkin, but he literally beat Golovkin at his own game, in the style that GGG fans love about Golovkin. Yeah Canelo beat him that way and it was truly glorious.

I get it that people don't like Canelo because of how wide some of his fights were scored, but regardless of how you feel provided he gets thru the year unbeaten... his record will stand as
At 154 wine over a unbeaten Trout #1JMW and WBA Titlist, #1 JMW Lara and WBA JMW Champ, Smith WBO JMW Champ
    At 160 GGG 2x WBA,WBC,IBF Champ #1MW P4P top 3, Cotto #1 MW WBC/Lineal MW Champ.
At 168 he'll have beaten Fielding* WBA Titlist.
Throw in wins vs not great but solid guys like Chavez, Khan, Angulo,Rhodes,Lopez plus experiences fighting one of the P4P Greatest fighters ever in PBF... gotta put some respect on the kids name... You can hate on some close fights but name the fighter who hasn't had them... some of the greatest Wins in boxing history are controversial
