Styles make fights. Cotto's only two losses are against two fighters who were very aggressive style pressure fighters. Floyd, Martinez, or Alvarez are completely different fights.

Really you can ask the same question about the 3 above mentioned fighters. Who have they beat to make you think they can beat Cotto?

Well he managed to ruptur Pacquiao's eardrum despite having basically no corner in and leading up to that fight.

Floyd decided to go on vacation so we'll never know of his superb jab, timing, educated pressure, and body work would have distinguished his abilities.

Barker showed that while Martinez is a top fighter, is a mere mortal.

With Alvarez, you've got it backwards: what has HE shown to suggest he could beat Cotto?

I don't expect Cotto to take, and then win, every one of those fights at this point in his career, but I really fail to see the humor in the discussion.

And if he beats Pac he can claim like Mayweather that he beat every opponent he ever faced.
His big fight record would also be very good, with a few more wins (incl. Pac, and a MW title) and he could be 20-2 in title fights across four divisions, having avenged his losses, and fought the likes of Pac, Mosley, Margarito, Martinez. Comebacks are also considered legacy enhancing, and Cotto was written off long ago.
Easily ATG worthy. Only the haters can't see this, esp. Mayweather fanatics. They can't ever consider Cotto as a great fighter, same as Margarito, because Mayweather never fought him.

Indeed. Wladimir Klitschko would be a great win for Cotto. Just slightly behind his close decision victory over Shane Mosley.

    I agree.

It isn't too late, I just don't think Cotto can do it. I mean, if he fights the best of this era in and around his weight class, and wins some of those matches (while being competitive in any match he loses or draws), he could still go down as an ATG. I just don't see it happening.

Cotto is one step outside the ATG level...

He may have lost to the 2 biggest cheater of this generation. We will never know how high up the ATG chart he could have been.

  10. Definitely a top 2 or 3 ATG on the Puerto Rican list.

How does he rate above Gomez, Ortiz, Benitez, Trinidad, and De Jesus (among several others)?

Trinidad has a better resume and is better head to head. I can't see him struggling to beat Clottey in his prime, or getting pasted by Pacquiao. I think Cotto's a good fighter and he's fun to watch and easy to support, but we're getting carried away here. He doesn't have all time great ability.
