Is it true that bare-knuckle fighting would cause less brain damage?

    ...than gloved fighting?

Because you don't want to break your hands, you'd hit less hard but knock the other guy out quicker/ win on a cut faster than in the gloved alternative...no?

In theory you can make a case for it but it is completely moot since the trauma received to the face in a bare-knuckle fight would not allow fighters to continue for long.

There will never be a controlled study.

We'll know more in the next 20+ years when these UFC guys start retiring.

    Right enough.

I remember claims that there was no such thing as "punch drunk" before gloves.

That sort of thing will have to go in the bin.

Theoretically, yes. But bare knuckle fighting would create a lot more cuts as well. A small MMA glove to protect the knuckles and prevent at least some cuts... I think there is a strong case, since most people who suffer from punch drunkeness, suffer such due to the volume of punches they take..

If you just get knocked out quickly, its generally less damaging than getting knocked down over and over, or taking hundreds of punches to the head every fight.

True. Bare-knuckle fights last less longer, so the brain doesn't get impacted as much as in boxing.

Gloves were used initially to protect a fighters HANDS first and face second. The trauma to the delicate bones of the hands is much more when not reinforced by the taping before the glove is laced up. After taping, the bones are pretty much taped into place and have a stronger ability to both absorb and dish out punishment without injury. Bare knuckle fighting is just as hard on the hands as the face. In the long run, I would imagine that the reinforced, taped and braced bones would be able to do more damage than an umprotected hand in a bare knuckle fight. The glove itself would disperse some of the shock of the blow delivered by the taped hand, but again this would also benefit the bones of the hand IMHO.

    ???

In the bare knuckle days, fights generally lasted much longer than they do today with gloves.

30 or forty round was common.

One of John L's fights was stopped due to darkness and resumed the next day.

    Yeah.

"Depending on the modern authority, Sullivan was first considered world heavyweight champion either in 1888 when he fought

    :yikes Heres the whole thing.
