Are both of those things true even though they seem contradictory? As most HWs with thin resumes are never brought up much as a top H2H fighter historically and are usually downplayed in that regard.
If he beats Whyte, his resume will compare favorably to Jack Dempsey or Sonny Liston, both of whom are held up as greats. When you unseat a great fighter, you don't have to do a lot more.
Yes. His size and athleticism is generational and hes very skilled and a very good inside fighter which most hws arent from any era
If a fighter never fought or beat a 6'3-ish mover, does he have a thin résumé? If a fighter never fought or beat a tough brawler, does he have a thin résumé? If a fighter never fought or beat a decent southpaw, does he have a thin résumé? If a fighter never fought or beat a prolific one-punch KO artist, does he have a thin résumé? If a fighter never fought or beat a 6'5+, 235+ lbs super-heavyweight, does he have a thin résumé? If you look at historical HW's with "great résumé's" you will find that some of these archetypes are absent, either because they didn't exist, existed in small numbers or were avoided (Joe Louis for example said he'd never fight a southpaw after getting schooled by a LHW southpaw in the gym). Southpaw heavyweights, one-punch KO artists and SHW's were not features of the American cruiser era (pre-90's) so there is a huge structural limitation there. For what it's worth, Fury has beaten all of these types, remained undefeated doing so and fought the most dangerous of them exclusively on the road, with two of the performances (Wlad, Wilder 2) being extremely dominant. Whether people understand this consciously or not, these are big reasons why he's regarded as a H2H monster, aside from him being billed as 6’9, 256-273 lbs, with great athleticism, skill and toughness.
If he beats Whyte and you're optimistic in your appraisal of Wilder and Chisora then the resume has started to fill out a bit. I doubt we're going to see him go back and fight the Ruizes and Parkers of the world or test out the next generation so he'll probably never be among the top resume-wise. H2H I have trouble thinking of anyone I am certain could beat him five times out of five, that's a rare club to be in.
Looking at that weigh in for the lineal heavyweight championship of the world. Due to the “modern day more sophisticated training and nutritional methods” I saw 2 bloated fat heavyweights take to the scales. The champion with his Bermuda shorts and builders backside on display, the challenger not looking much better. Louis, Marciano, Ali, Liston, Frazier Holyfield they are not.
