...is the question I attempted to answer using the available fight footage, of which we have 25 minutes, about 70% of the full 35:29 minutes of action that night. I also used extra broadcast commentary which didn't cover the entire gap but it did fill in some of the blanks to help me reach an estimate. This content is protected
Great effort Pedro. Cheers. The swelling of the left side of Louis’ face after 11 + rounds was similar to that of the right side of Ali’s face after the FOTC, a full 15 rounds. In fact, I believe Joe’s was worse. In the rematch, Joe threw 41 punches, achieving 31 solid connections over a period of just 2 mins and 4 secs. Joe had corrected himself since the first fight but he also wasn’t going to let Max get out of the gates to gain any momentum whatsoever. Louis posted one of the, if not THE, ATG comebacks in a rematch after losing the first match in such devastating fashion.
I wouldn't doubt it. Schmeling stated he'd never seen a man take as much punishment as Louis did before succumbing. I don't think his durability was ever quite the same after.
This video does a great job of highlighting both Schmeling's (probably underrated) quality & Louis' immense courage.
Louis was reportedly dropped 7 times in his 1st amateur bout. When asked about that in an interview w/ Barry Tompkins decades later, Billy Conn remarked, "It takes a great man to get up 7 times."
