I don't want to rubbish Jack Loew because he seems like a great guy who is a genuine boxing man but does anyone else think he has taken Pavlik as far as he can?

Look at the fight with Hopkins. I remember Loew telling Kelly something like, "do what Calzaghe did to him." For a trainer to tell his boxer to start fighting a totally different style during a fight shows that:

    a) He didn't study Hopkins properly and develop a plan.
    b) He doesn't know his own fighter well enough to know that he can't switch styles to one like Calzaghe's.
    c) He can't tell Pavlik how to adjust his current style to deal with Hopkins.

Then when I hear they're both hitting the bars together, the whole thing seems wrong.

Clearly he has something to do with it. Pav could definitely benefit from a quality trainer at this stage in his career.

But there's also the mis-management of Pav that he is to blame for, at least somewhat. It isn't just Bob Arum. Loew is overprotecting Pavlik, which is the last thing he needs to be doing right now. Pav needs to rebuild his reputation as a top notch fighter.

Good point this one , you would have to question Loew with advice like that and the fact Pavlik is pretty 1 dimentional , he never seems to mix up what he does , clearly his style and size @160 is what has got him where he is at now , but yeah maybe Loew has taken him as far as he can i mean he did look pretty stumped against BHop .

However whatever Loew does for Pavlik in the gym works , at least for now anyway so why change it .

I felt this when looking at Hatton and Billy Graham , but the move from Hatton came far too late for me and was the wrong choice in Floyd " money grabbing loud mouth twat " Mayweather , it backfired on Hatton , in this instance you would have to look at Amir Khan and say from the outside looking in now he looks to have timed his move to the wildcard perfectly , grew up on the tuition of the best AMA coaches the UK has to offer and switched after 20 pro fights to one of the best coaches in the world .

Or would Pavlik be exposed in a better gym just like Hatton was in the build up to the Pac fight (Hatton supposedly took a pasting in sparring with some of Mayweather's chosen sparring partners) who knows , at the moment i would say Pavlik and Loew work well together , Pavlik comes forward throwing straight punches there is no black art in that , and its a pretty good job because as you say Loew is no Boxing genius .

I actually think you may do more harm than good replacing Pavlik with Lowe. They've sort of grown together as a duo...and I don't think Pavlik would trust anybody other than Lowe to right the ship that is his career. I think their perfect for one another.

Loew did look pretty good coach vs coach against Manny Steward in the first Taylor fight, clearly Pavliks best fight to date.

But yes, Loew probaby won't teach Pavlik a lot more in terms of skills. Pavlik is good at what he does, but maybe the two just don't have a certain type of intelligence to develop him further. There was clearly no insight why the loss to Hopkins happened in their statements afterwards.

I know the ego of a trainer is probably big in general, but couldn't they bring on another person to give some more expert ideas thinking outside the box of what Loew already knows?

yes, i dont see Pavlik improving with Loew but the chemistry is too strong between them its probably too late to drop him and get a better trainer, doing that now would maybe be the equivalent of Hatton dropping Graham.

Truthfully though could anyone get Pavlik's trust? Probably not. He and Jack Loew are fine as a duo/tandem. I don't see a problem there.
