This is the problem, ATG in the traditional understanding is top 100 and I don't see how Toney cracks that maybe people are using the term ATG in a top 150 sense in which case i'd agree he is an ATG.

    Yes.

Three division champ (almost four). Wins over McCallum, Nunn, Barkley, Jirov and Holyfield. Long-time pound for pound entrant. Incredible skills.

What heavyweight success. He was a pretty good heavyweight but not amazing or anything. Holyfield was a pretty good win despite him aging and a draw with Hasim Rahman.

:lol:@people mentioning Holyfield, yet if someone was to mention Jones as part of Calzaghe's resume everybody would get butthurt.

I know this will be deeply unpopular on here, but I voted no. He had amazing skills but suffered too many loses to low level fighters, was out of shape too much and took PEDs - and that stops him from being a true ATG.

Should have been an ATG but didn't quite make it.

Unlike someone like B-Hop, who had no right to be a ATG but for me is.

So he loses to low level fighters but you completely dismiss the hall of famers he beat ?

And yet you have Hopkins as one yet his resume cant even come close to Toney's :-(

No, he could look great on a given night but wasnt consistent enough to be an all time great, he is not top 5 at any weight class he fought at and failed steroid tests

the guy also for being in a 4 title era hardly was champ

he was a champ at 168 for a yr then went 9 yrs without a title and has gone 10 yrs since without a title

I mean there are a lot of guys from the last 2 decades who have done much more

I wouldn't be surprised if he was also on steroids for that Jirov fight.

    Just sayin'.

There's a lot of great fighters out there but not all of them are ATG's. A guy like Toney is borderline ATG at best meaning he's in the limbo situation you've described above.

From what Toney did from Super Middle to Cruiser and even his stint at heavy proves he can hang with the best of them in any era. That's what an all time great really means ..The responses here are just mind boggling ! :patsch

nobody looks at Toney's career and gives a **** that he had a loss to Drake Thadzi in his last light heavyweight fight where he passed out twice trying to make the weight. big deal. that shouldn't determine whether he's a ****ing great. You're supposed to look at what he's done in his career, what he accomplished. Greats of the past in the '30s '40s etc just moved on if they got a loss. win your next fight and your back in the mix. He beat Thadzi something like 8 to 4 anyways, so I don't know why people bring it up like it's a career breaking loss.
