Is James Toney an ATG?

If Toney is an ATG then why not Cotto? Championships in 3 different divisions, wins over; Mosley, Judah, Margarito, Torres, Malignaggi, Clottey, Quintana

 

I'd take McCallum and Nunn over nearly every name you mentioned. Both were highly-ranked pound for pounders. None of those fighters you named were when Cotto beat them.

I have him as lower tier ATG. Around Oscar and Tito top 70-100.

 

Toney is well above Oscar.

 

One HOF in Mosley past his prime, Margarito was totally shot, the other wins are good not great. I'm a big fan of Cotto but he isn't an ATG. Toney has almost double his wins and fights also.

 

I'd lump in Mosley to that mix.

 

Oscar resume is hard to evaluate because of all the close calls, I have him winning against Withaker, draw with Ike, beating Mosley in the second fight and Tito losing to Sturm. Add the Chavez win. You have a very solid resume there. I think it's pretty close to Toney.

I thought he lost to Pea and Ike. Don't think much of either Chavez. His biggest, clear win is over...Vargas? Nah, he's not in Toney's class.

And I like Toney's wins over Nunn, McCallum and Jirov over 99.99% of Oscar's resume.

 

my points were:

1- he took PEDs, Hopkins was clean.
2- he was not always in shape, Hopkins is always in shape
3- he lost fights he should have won, Hopkins didn't

regarding their resume, James might have a couple of better names he beat but Hopkins has the better achievements. And it is not like B-Hop never smashed up the odd HOFer or two. (Tito, ODLH).

Also, resume is not just who you beat, but who you lost too and what were the coniditons at the time.
