I just read an article from Toney's promoter Dan Goosen on BT. Reporter: What's the latest with James Toney and when can we expect him back in the ring? DG: I'm sure James will be looking at this fight with interest. I know he'll be sitting ringside, along with Cristobal Arreola (who will be fighting his biggest challenge to date on April 11 against Jameel McCline at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas). My thoughts: I knew that Toney was not a top priority of Goossen anymore but this answer is just an insult to Toney's always loyal fans. I am bitterly disappointed. 3 months have passed since Toney decisioned fringe contender Oquendo and Goossen has done absolutely nothing in the process. On the other side, he did something for Chambers and Areola. Goossen had the possibility to set a new date for the Thompson - Toney fight as he has both under contracts but he let that opportunity pass. The winner of that fight would have been credible and in good position to get a title shot. It hurts to say it looks to me as Goossen has absolutely no plan what to do with Toney anymore. Now at age 40, Toney can't play those waiting games anymore.
I hate to admit it but yes he is. Toney is over 40 and not in good shape. Perhaps he may be successful with some mid-level opponents but I don't see him fighting for a title nor any contenders.
Yeah he's done. I don't think he's the type of guy that will ever officially announce his retirement but he might finally have seen sense and called it a day. Great career and some memorable moments over the years but I have no desire in seeing him fight on.
why the **** is James Toney going through the whole heavyweight division, he should be aiming for belt holders... Give this man credit, he will fight anyone..! Anyone..!
Toney was out boxed by Sam Peter who has ZERO skill. None. That is all I need to know about James Toney. He has not beat anyone at Heavyweight worth a crap and was given the Oquendo fight by the judges. He is a fat steroid addicted 40 year old slob. He has been finished for years.
Cruiserweight was Toney's peak. Going to the heavies was a mistake. I understand why he did it but only if he could have remained at CW he'd probably be ruling that division right now - and quite possibly the best CW ever.
Yeah, I think Toney is done. At least at the upper level. But I also blame Toney for it... I think if he was in better shape he might be taken more serious by fighters, mgr, and promoters.
It could also mean that Toney will fight against the winner of that match. :think Seeing as he said that Toney will be watching it with interest.
