Is Jim Jeffries criminally underrated today?

A few out there still do. Historian Kelly Richard Nicholson is another one. Usually the historians who view Jeffries highly really know their stuff.

I saw those in action in Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Totally ineffective vs monsters.

Nice try at moving my point away from what I meant. Top tier contenders fought each other very often, that's my point. Who cares that Fitzsimmons didn't face more journeymen between Jeffries fights, when he dominated two best contenders available?

Furthermore, the record of Fitzsimmons, Corbett, Jeffries is probably incomplete.

Jeffries had 20 fights in 10 years
    Ruhlin 50 fights in12 years.
    Sharkey 52 in 9years.
    Corbett18 fights in17 years.
Jeffries won the title from Fitz in1899 he did not rematch Fitz until 1902 despite the fact that Fitz ko'd the number 1 and 2 contenders Ruhlin & Sharkey in1900.
If you count The Finnegan fight as a title defence Jeffries made7 defences in his 5 year reign, 4 of them against men who had any right to be challenging for a title.
If you cannot articulate what you mean onto the key board whose fault is that?

Since the foremost biographer of these champions has been unable to unearth more fights I think we can only go with what we have. If there are more fights out there perhaps they might be defeats? Ever thought about that

seems everything has been covered. My take is Jeff had the best reign prior to Louis and was second only to Johnson up to Louis. Since then there has been a lot of water under the bridge and a lot of great heavyweights. About #15 is reasonable for Jeff today.

Jeffries did have his critics in his day. This is from an article from Tad Dorgan on 7-1-1910 just prior to the Johnson fight recording what Jeff's critics were saying about him:

"Jeffries never was a boxer, never had a fight he wasn't used up in, and as far as meeting a man like Johnson goes, he never dreamed of it."

"Why he never beat a young fellow in his life. He made his reputation off old men like Fitzsimmons, Corbett, Jackson, and the like. They were all in when he got them. Young fellows like Sharkey and Choynski, although they were half a foot shy in height and fifty pounds lighter, went the distance with him."

In a 1931 Ring Article, Hype Igoe had this to say concerning a debate with Tex Rickard about Jeffries versus Dempsey:

"I always insisted that Jack Dempsey with his two great punishing hands, could have whipped Jeff at his best . . . no one-handed fighter ever existed who could whip the Manassa Mauler."

That Jeff was a one-handed fighter without a good right was a common criticism from those who saw him. On film I do not see him even attempt an overhand right.

On the other hand, Tex Richard gave the pro Jeffries take in rebuttal:

"The strongest, greatest puncher in the game. You never seed an athlete in all the world like Jeffries."

I understand you'll get the one out of ten guy but it is very rare and rarer each year .. I 've seen Jeffries far more often disregarded as a dancing hippo or a clumsy buffoon than anything resembling an.. all time top ten heavyweight .... on super rare occasions you'll see him at the bottom of the top fifteen but more often than not you don't see him anywhere at all ..

    Dear The Seamus,

He might have beaten Anthony Joshua.

Of course I entirely agree, eg Fitzsimmons was ringside at Reno in1910.He believed Johnson could have ended the fight whenever he wished, but he also said a prime Jeffries would have won .
Another ringsider was the famous champion wrestler and trainer of John L Sullivan he stated that Johnson would have beaten any version of Jeffries.

Immediately after refereeing the Reno fight Rickard said," Johnson, as he stands today is the greatest fighter I have seen" Johnson referred to Jeffries having just a left hand when he challenged him in1903.
"My man now is Jeffries,Im big enough, weigh near 200lbs,and I'll tell you the fight wont be one-sided .He can't toucha man with his right ,and I'm sure I could take care of that left and slip him a few on the side." Jack Johnson.

Igoe always stated that Jeffries took a worse beating from Fitz in their 2nd fight than Willard did from Dempsey.
