Is Joe Calzaghe a H.O.F fighter...and is Cal a legend, an ATG, or great fighter?

If I am everything you say I am, then how have I been able to actively participate in a good debate with someone with the vast knowledge, respected intelligence and admirable objectivity of McGrain? Could it possibly be that you regard me with the very same irrational, biased and illogical contempt that you, for some bizarre reason, undoubtedly hold for Manny Pacquiao?

He will go down a a great fighter HOF for sure but a legend and ATG no. He would be a Legend in Welsh but in the general boxing community no. There would be always a big ? beside his record because he beat two legends in the sport that was nowhere near there prime. He's a good fighter hands down but i will like to know how he would do against a prime jones and hopkins.

Hearns not in Calzaghe's class????

Tommy Hearns was a master boxer who did beat Virgil Hill for the ligtheavyweight championship.

 

He's probably a hall of famer because of his numerous title defenses but his resume is by no means the best. The "names" on his record, Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Chris Eubank were well past it. When Joe defeated Kessler, Kessler was in his prime and you could argue that to be Joe's most solid win over a fresh, fearsome, in their prime fighter, but Kessler is by no means of the calibre of Hopkins/Jones and it doesn't look like he will ever be, good fighter, but not great like them.

Overall I think Joe is a strong fighter and makes the cut, though he by no means is in the Hagler-Hearns category. If there is a strong case for Hopkins being in there, why not Joe? I don't think Hopkins career resume is that much better then Joe's, at least until recently when Hopkins seemed to have turned back the clock beat Tarver and defeated Pavlik decisively (I think Joe would've done more or less the same). A good debate would be who should be ranked over the over, Hopkins or Calzaghe?

Eubank got dropped not Calzaghe. At least watch his fights if you're gonna talk about them. Cal won three out of the first four and almost none of the rest. The fight could have gone 8-4, 7-5, or 6-6 depending upon one's perspective. Joe caught right hand after right hand with his face against a non-peak Eubank. The only positive is that Joe was always coming forward and he shook off the punches. On effective landed punches, rounds, and points (IMO) he lost the fight. He was hurt and holding in the last seconds of the 12th. A draw is the least that should have occurred. The conditions were highly favorable to Joe and the hugely supportive crowd was trying to will him to victory. Turn off the crowd noise and the biased commentators and score the fight without preconceived notions and come back. You haven't even watched the fight. Afterwards, he knew he had gone through a war. He fought nobodies immediately after that (Sobot and a 38 year old Ferrayra). And, didn't take a risky fight again for about nine years.
