I think Joe is a Workrate guy with great Speed, a good chin who comes in Highly conditioned for every fight. I wouldnt say he is a Master boxer or counterpunching and defensive Wizard with every trick and punch in the book up his sleeve.

Am I blinded by my dislike of his career choices and what I think is overrated ability or is he really a Master boxer? break it down for me

here are my examples of fighters I believe are Master boxers

    Marquez

    Finito Lopez

    Archie Moore

    Roberto Duran

    Willie Pep

    Benny leanord

    James Toney

I dont think Pac is a Master boxer but I have him #1 P4P PAC is a supernatural to me.

No, he's not a master boxer. He's a guy who uses his natural abilities to get it done. He's got hand speed, quick feet, and incredible stamina. Yeah, he can adjust his game plan to suit the situation but i think that's different from actually being a crafty/slick boxer who really exhibits great skill in the ring like Toney, Hopkins, or Marquez.

    Yes he is.

Yes his stamina and speed are 2 massive attributes he uses but without his adaptability they wouldnt mean much. That level of adaptability to me marks him out as a master boxer. This is a guy that out jabbed a superb jabber like Kessler, ran rings round the next Tyson, won fights one handed and beat Hopkins fighting Hopkins fight.

It would have been nice to see him in more important fights earlier, but at least we got to see them.

Oh, Cal is a master boxer. He is a great defensvie fighter too. Once you hit him hard, he comes back hard, and he nulifies the other guys best punch and does his damage. His only fight that I can think of that he didn't look like that was against Hop, and who looks good against Hop?

You don't beat the guys he beat by slapping. When he needs to land hard, he does trust me. I saw Byron Mitchell put Cal on his ass, and saw Cal trade with him until he knocked Mitch down. Cal has a granite chin. I think he can still beat Pav, but his time is running out.

No, Master Boxer is the LAST thing anyone would describe Joe as.
Kessler and THE NEXT TYSON (lol) aren't/weren't anything special... Good yes, world champion yes, but honestly, nothing special. Lacy is not going to achieve anything more in his career, so let's see what happens with Kessler... It'd be a shame if his two biggest wins turn out to be nobody's.

Hopkins was in his MID-forties and still put him on the floor and took him to a damn SD.

And those fights where he won one handed were against guys like Tucker Pudwill. So again, nothin' special there.

Someone who can box, jab, weave roll with the punches. Who can throw every punch jab hook cross etc. Knows distance can control distance can pick apart a fighter by using his ring intelligence can fight sluggers boxers, maulers, power guys and through their tremendous footwork, defense an offense talent and a deep resoivar of skills can hang around for years and fight guys 3-4 weight clases above them. Who when shot can still compete with anyone because they can box their asses off, that is a master boxer as opposed to a guy who can box but relys on speed or power or reflexes and when those go their boxing skill is not enough and they can no longer compete..

When did Byron Mitchell become a good scalp? Before Cal, he was damn near unheard of. He had power, was american, was a former champion, and had taken a 35 year-old Ottke to a SD. Pretty much in a nutshell.

Cal huggers keep bringing up the Mitchell fight as if others should be impressed. I suppose the WAY he won it was kinda impressive, but the guy he did it to never impressed me.

Next we'll hear how good his performance against journeyman Brewer was.

Yeah, you have to ask yourself, "If Calzaghe loses his foot speed, hand speed, and stamina, how good of a boxer would he be?"

Calzaghe is very, very good at what he does, but he is absolutely not a master boxer in the Robinson - Lenaord - Arguello sense.

He's a bit of an enigma; how a fighter as clearly flawed as he is has been so succesful is beyond me.
