Arum supporters, Pac and Pav fans will say no, and the true boxing fans will say 'yes' with more saying 'yes' than 'no' lol... Cal is an ATG imo...

Umm Nigel Benn and Michael Watson are not great fighters? What planet are you living on?

To answer the OP, no he isn't. Calzaghe beat Hopkins who even at his advanced age managed to shut out Kelly Pavlik. Hopkins also beat Tarver and arguably Jermaine Taylor in both fights. Hopkins was still an elite fighter when Calzaghe fought him. Although Lacy was exposed, he was exposed by Calzaghe. Lacy was undefeated and looked like a world beater before he was beaten pillar to post.

Now do I think Calzaghe fought the best available? No I don't. But I wouldn't compare him to Ricky Hatton. Hatton is basically a limited pressure fighter with bad defense, above average speed, above average power, and 1 dimensional.

Calzaghe has many dimesions to his game, if you watch his fight against Mikkel Kessler, you can see him shutout a very good opponent and make adjustments mid fight.

Calzaghe is an ATG, you forget when Hopkins and Jones fought him, he was past his prime as well. He couldn't hit like he used to because his hands were shot, yet he still won.

Calzaghe got the 'w' against Hopkins, whereas Hatton got brutally KO'd by 2 of the 3 elite fighters he fought.

I think Calzaghe was a better fighter, at the elite level.

Hatton was world class but not elite.

agreed, hatton had less skill than calzaghe.
but rather than putting his skills to more benefit than calzaghe he made moves for legitimate fights against prime and rated fighters that calzaghe was never willing to do.

thats the difference between them and why we can gauge hattons skill based on who he fought in their prime and when he fought them...and why there is so much contention about calzaghe.

most people who still try to play up calzaghe beating a faded jones and hopkins as being more legitimate than what they really were are brits whos pride is hurt that a very good fighter isnt seen in a brighter light.

    thats just the truth.

Calzaghe would not have to worry about the likes of Mayweather who is a runner. No way Floyd fights a fighter as good as Joe in any division. Clazaghe was a warrior. To put Mayweather in the same sentence is a insult to the sport.

You're an idiot. Calzaghe was a defensive fighter too, does that mean he's a runner?

Mayweather belongs in the same sentence as Calzaghe if not in better sentences. Mayweather moved up 5 weight divisions and fought all the best guys available. Has been P4P#1 for 2 years, fighter of the year for 2 years and also a possible candidate of greatest fighter of this generation standing behind Pacquiao who took the spot but can change depending on future fights/opponents. Mayweather's resume shits on Cazlaghe.

Mayweather never stayed in his hometown fighting tomato cans and ducking everyone only to show up when everyone was beyond shot. You do realize that if Lacy and Kessler didn't pack their bags and belts to make the trip Calzaghe would remain with the WBO title fighting the same guys, right?

Joe won his title in OCT 97 for which Jones and Toney were already boxing in the light heavy and up divisions so they werent really factors in regards to potential fights unless Joe was willing to step up or they down which wasnt gonna happen at that time.

Calzaghe had a lot of natural ability such as handspeed, footwork, punching power, aggressivity, fitness, toughness and a good chin, tons of stamina and heart, boxing inteligence, and even tho he didn't fight with the intensity of Ricky Hatton, it's difficult to imagine that there would be a Manny Pacquiao or a Floyd Mayweather that could have done it to him... Eubank was said to be to strong, Brewer was said to be too tough, Mitchell and Lacy were said to be powerhouses, Kessler was said to be the complete athlete and the much stronger man, Hopkins' sleekness is every man's achilles heel and he came through, Roy Jones was still quite fast and coordinated to make him look bad and he didn't... Even today, I don't think that Froch, Bute or Dawson could have pushed him further. Maybe a Nigel benn of the past or even backwards in time, Ray Leonard?
