It's a real shame as the 90's MW SMW scene although being great could've been a lot better had it not been for the US/UK divide.

if I'm honest we (I'm an American now living in the London), were as guilty of it as they were!!! Only G-man travelled.

I'm surprised till this day how Calzaghe got up and recovered from that.

So was I. It was brutal.

If Calzaghe hadn't got up from that punch and been KO'd (and if it hadn't taken away his fighters heart) I truly believe he would have carried on fighting and fought Dawson, re-matched Hopkins, fought Froch etc etc. I think his '0' was holding him back.

And Roy Jones Jr would have been officially 'BACK' for a HUGE re-match fight with Hopkins.

It's amazing how one punch can change everything, but Calzaghe's GRANITE chin got in the way.

Definitely, though I think Calzaghe would have retired regardless. Either a rematch with Jones or retire.

I believe Calzaghe was the real deal. Unfortunately he didn't meet many of the other superstars in their respective primes. Hopkins nearly beating Calzaghe (and doing so on my card) is not a big knock against Calzaghe. Calzaghe was also older at that point, and Hopkins is a ****ing machine. It's not like Hopkins was some 40-something bum.

That said, Ricky Hatton is an excellent fighter also, regardless of losing to the best two fighters of his generation. That is hardly a knock against him either.

Y'now maybe Ricky Hatton shouldn't retire. He lost to 2 of the greatest fighters. Genuine all time greats. There is no shame in that.

Maybe if he get's in the ring again with someone more on his level he can retire with more dignity. To retire after a KO like that would be a shame after such an amazing career.

But then on the other side of the coin, at least at the moment he's only been beaten by the elite. There's wouldn't be anything worse than losing to a bum.

How hard is it to look this stuff up and stop yourself looking stupid?

When Calzaghe fought and beat Eubank for the WBO SMW title in his 23rd fight, Toney had already fought twice at cruiserweight. Five months before Calzaghe v Eubank, Toney had attempted to make light heavyweight for a fight against Thadzi and ended up weighing in five ****ing pounds overweight.

not the smartest or the strongest fighter of his division, but he did have alot of heart. even tho Bhops is my favorite fighter, i gotta admit joe beat him down the stretch and outworked him in the later rounds. i still think Bhops would of beaten him in a rematch he seemed the smarter and stronger fighter, but calzaghe always came in shape and was a nonstop punching machine. there really should be no comparison between hatton and joe c. joe actually beat the best fighters out there that were stronger and smarter than him, can't really say that about hatton or even floyd

I still don't understand who he ducked, he beat Kessler (who is now consensus the best of a strong SMW division)
He Beat Hopkins number 1 in light heavyweight division (regardless of whether they were both passed their peak)

    Eze your a ****ing idiot.
If your not trying to convince us that wlad is as exciting as pac or as great as lennox or tyson you are saying calzaghe cant take a punch.
You are a ****ing shamefull poster and should delete your account immediately for the sake of others.
Go back to youtube as that is obviously where your boxing knowledge comes from. And argue with the red necks on there.
    You are a WANKER.

I don't understand how people argue that getting hit with the wrist was somehow better than if the punch had landed. I've never seen any respectable martial arts place advising students to hit people with the bloody wrist -- you use the OUTSIDE part of the forearm, near the elbow, or the elbow itself. If Jones had tightened his uppercut up -- shortened the arc to make it more explosive -- he would have landed flush and hurt Calzaghe much more, in my opinion. The timing was perfect, but the placement was wrong.
