I would have Jones between 25 & 50. Still can't believe it was 50-50 in the greatness poll between him and Whitaker. Once Jones lost his reflexes he was done. A past peak Whitaker gave peak DLH fits.... Jones wouldn't have been able to do that against a similar level of opponent.
Why I think Calz should be right up in the top 20 is his style. It doesn't matter what you bring, he finds a way to answer it. Sure his resume has let him down but that doesn't detract from how good he is. Also, given the protective nature of his promoter and the landscape at the time, he never had the opportunity to be an ATG.
Ruiz at heavyweight is still impressive. He might not be great compared to other heavies, but for a light heavy to do that is a great win. Griffin was a good win the second time around, in that manner. He also beat Virgil Hill far more impressively than anybody previously. Toney is the big stand out win that makes it clear cut. I don't believe that version of Hopkins was better than the one Calzaghe fought. Overall its that bit better than Calzaghe's.
It would help him, naturally. If he dominated both divisions, a big ask, that would probably make him Joe's signature win. I think most people still consider Hopkins to be that, since Kessler is apparently "unproven". I'm sure it would boost him a few places, and turn a few of the doubters his way.
I mean I consider him British... because if i emigrated at the age of 10.. i would still think of myself as British
to be honest there are many boxers above Joe calzaghe in greatest of all time and HOF greats but not in the british division he has accomplished more than any other british boxers other than fitszimmons who you can argue was new zealand raised but born in britian he will certainly be a HOF fighter for his record, his title defences, his reign as champion
Look, I'm no boxing expert, but given how long the sports been going, and how many great boxers there have been, putting Calzaghe in the Top 20 is crazy talk. Probablly more crazy than those that voted: "Not ATG, Not HOF".
Sorry don't agree... Joe's saving grace is his longevity, but most of the other greats didn't have the WBO belt... they only had 1 or 2 belts to go after and the HAD to fight the VERY best to get them. a 10 year WBO reign means very little to me if your defending it against the likes of Thornberry and Pudwill et al Like i said Joe is saved by his longevity but there are a whole list of British boxers who have much better wins than Joe.
So would bernard hopkins regin as IBF champ for 10 years mean nothing to you either, But to be honest which british boxers achivements out match joes, even roy jones jr's resume doesnt exactly scream names of terror and i bet you have him way higher than Calzaghe in ATG fighters
