Is Joe Calzaghe's Punching Sytle The Ugliest In History?

Ward-Calzaghe in 2009 would have been pointless and would not have proven who the better man was at their respective best (Calzaghe was well past his).

Likewise, Calzaghe-Ward even a couple of years earlier would have been unfair in Ward's favor as he was still very green.

There is no point on the timeline where a match-up between the two of them at their best is viable, because there was no overlap between the best of each. Therefore, such a match-up is every bit as hypothetical as Calzaghe vs. Sutherland, or Ward vs. Benn.

And for the record, at the times they fought each other (not counting the 1st Jones-Hopkins match, obviously) ALL THREE were past it. Calzaghe-Hopkins, Calzaghe-Jones, and Hopkins-Jones II were all pretty much meaningless fights.

You're really faulting Calzaghe for not fighting the man who seems to be emerging as the heir to the 168 lb throne while that man is entering the thick of his prime, despite Calzaghe being far past his own prime? :huh

Sure, it would have been turnabout in a sense...with Calzaghe getting to play the role of Eubank over a decade before - but fighters aren't obligated to get embarrassed in torch-passing fights. You judge guys by what they do when they themselves are at their peak. If you don't think Calzaghe took enough big risks during his own peak - that's certainly fair. Getting on him for not fighting Ward in 2009? That's more than a little bit silly.

He never fought anyone. Easily the weakest resume a "champion" has ever retired with. He makes Chris John look like Ray Robinson.

Yeah like B-hop wasn't the #1 LHW and in the top ten p4p at that time and like he still isn't. Like Kessler wasn't the second best super middleweight at that time. I cannot defend the Jones Jr fight though I must admit this one really sucked
