Joe Louis ,I go against perceived wisdom and have Louis at no 4 on my ATG list.
Heresy I know ,most have him1/2. But head to head not withstanding ,was he the most complete heavyweight ever?

Pros, he could box, and certainly punch, he had fast hands, every punch in the book , was a great finisher and had remarkable self possession in the ring.

Cons ,slowish feet and a less than granite jaw though it has been underestimated somewhat imo, he was also not particularly adept at adapting if things did not go according to plan.

A wonderfully correct puncher who could display patience and slowly break you down ,or strike like and adder and take your head off if you gave him an opening.

Is he the nearest thing to the complete heavyweight?

Nah, Ezzard Charles for example is "more complete" if by complete you mean technically complete. He might be the most complete guy never to have fought at LHW, i'm not sure.

I really don't think a heavyweight needs to be complete to be extremely successful nor that a complete heavyweight would necessarily be more successful than one who was very adept at a few aspects of the craft. I have often noted that a chin and a punch go farther in the heavyweight division than any other. Look at the list of champs from Jeffries to Willard, Dempsey, Tunney, Braddock , Baer, Marciano, early Ali, Frazier, Tyson, Lewis, Waldo... you have a list of flawed incomplete fighters who were at the very least inspired and at the best All Time Greats.

The alchemy changes in the top division. It's just a fact.

He's up there as the most complete certainly. I'd probably have Holy as the most complete myself. He could box as well as slug as well as most.

Tyson was technically very complete, but his stature and body build of course limited him stylistically.

Big time you can run but you can't hide, they can't even run
They're to big a target, they never been hit hard like that
were talking paralyzing punches ,..Not only that but Louis's hand speed is way faster his punch would be quicker then any punch they've ever telegraphed .His fist's would bounce of their heads like playing tether ball..They're gonna fall face
    first

Holy was a warrior compete in any era even though really a blown up cruiser not
a natural heavy like Tyson..Why do you think more then any fighter he gets accused of juicing . Do you think there's truth to that?

Charles is a good alternate pick:good

    Ezzard was a better mover.
Louis had a better jab, cross ,and uppercut
and I don't mean power, left hooks about the same.
    .

Thanks for f*cking up my thread smart ar*e:lol:

    no Rocky Marciano is ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    haha, just a joke :p

yes Joe Louis imo is the most complete,,,,,

the only area I could question was SIZE in todays fight game,,,,however, not enough to change how complete Louis was overall which was pretty incredible.

Ali never had that POWER that Louis had. My dad said it best to me when I was young and raving about Ali, he said, Louis was better because not only was he lighting fast like Ali but he had thunderous power, as well he would go on and on about how Louis didn't telegraph his punches, how he could generate power on a 6 inch punch, so naturally I watched tapes of Louis and read about him and it appeared the truth. The guy had some cat quick reflexes for a such a big guy back in his day. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Louis couldn't beat any of the super heavys today, just that I think it would be harder for him to beat some or all of them. Regardless, out of every heavy I would agree that Louis was the most complete.

I hope another like him comes along sooner or later.

I think Larry Holmes was the most complete heavyweight there was. He only had a few great attributes, but they all mean a lot at HW. His jab, chin, and overall mental toughness and intelligence were all great. Everything else he was good at, but he never had any big wholes in his game.

I'd say Larry Holmes, Sonny Liston and probably Jack Johnson are rather "complete" heavyweights too.

Ridd!ck Bowe had the ar$enal, but not the defensive touches.

Bowe was lacking in a few too many places, he was always a leaky ship, it just took him awhile to start filling up :bbb
