In selecting Ruiz, Roy chose a fighter primarily known for his clinch/maul game and some dirty tactics otherwise. These were the major bullets in Ruiz’ gun - the greatest perceived threats to Roy. Being not so kosher bullets it was then easy for Roy to demand that those bullets be removed - and the ref. Nady complied with Roy’s wishes to the letter. I mean, what was Ruiz without said bullets in his barrel? - it didn’t leave much else left for Roy to contend with. Once it became clear that Ruiz “strengths” were removed from the equation, the fight unpacked in not so shocking or surprising fashion.
