If athletes in usa chose boxing or mma, there would be a quality boost in the heavier weight divisions..
I'm not sure what the point of this thread is. Jon Jones never trained boxing. He wrestled and played football most of his life. If he hadn't knocked up his girlfriend when he was in college, he wouldn't have dropped out and become an MMA fighter.
I don't know - i'm by no means an MMA expert, and this is just me hypothesisig, BUT - I think that MMA allows more room for a fighter to rely on freak psysical abilities than boxing. For example, in boxing even the fastest guys can be timed and made to look basic, and the strongest guys kept at a range where their strength is ineffective. I'm not saying that MMA doesn't require you to be a well schooled fighter or that any old athletic freak can dominate the sport, but I get the impression that there are more dimensions in MMA which can be exploited by such a fighter.
Jon Jones is an example of what MMA guys would get out of having boxing-type conditioning. The guy comes in absolute top physical shape and looks like he should be a division above the flabby guys he's been fighting.
Jon Jones is the Roy Jones of MMA. He'd have been a great boxer or general athlete no matter what sport he played. I do think he's better off in MMA though because I don't think he would have been quite as good of a boxer as he is at MMA. His chin hasn't been tested so I dont know how good of a boxer he would be but I'm sure he could be a light heavyweight or cruiserweight champion, perhaps a champion in both.
In boxing he would be a HW as he walks around at 225-230 then fights at 205 which is the LHW in mma and in boxing that is still HW. His chin got tagged in his last fight he has a decent chin not glass and havent been tested enough to be ranked granite
i have sparred many local MMA guys.... and well they cant box. wild and crazy. no technique. look up MMA p4p anderson silvia sparring at wild card. he looks awful. mma and boxing are totally different sports.
