I'm a Jones fan but he does raise gamecocks and fights them (legally) in Louisiana. Plus, he raises pit bulls on his ranch. Why ain't they diggin' up his backyard?
People have a connection with dogs that elevates them above other animals. Whether you agree with that or not, they don't call dog "man's best friend" for nothing. Right or wrong people just don't care as much about chickens as they do about dogs The other issue isn't just the fighting but the execution of dogs because they weren't good enough. Not to mention violating RICO laws related to illegal high stakes gambling and organized crime
I made this same post on ESPN.com's messageboard. Jones does his cockfighting legally. Lousiana and one other state are the only two states in which it is legal. Does that make it right? No. Granted, roosters/chickens are not companions to humans and are more frequently eaten by us... it gives us no right to torture/harm them. It is natural for them to fight in the wild, but to set them up in an arena and hoot/hollar while betting money while an innocent animal is suffering to its death is not right. Let me put it into perspective. Ancient Rome would throw human slaves into arena's and watch them fight till death.... it's the same thing.
OK. Jones is a relatively big time athlete who fights chickens and "raises" pit bulls on his ranch. That just sounds suspuscious from the get go. I'm not saying he is guilty of anything but you'd think somebody might want to do some poking around.
Now that I think about it, Jones would probably want too big of a split of the purse to actually have his dogs fight.
So, you equate human beings the same as chickens in value? Forcing any animal to fight to the death or abusing animals in any way is pretty sick, but get a grip. Anyone of those slaves in ancient Rome was worth more than all the chickens that ever lived. Humans are capable of language, logical thought, mercy and empathy. Animals are pretty viscious and invariably selfish. You know the old saying about politics in the animal kingdom. There is no politics in the animal kingdom.
Except for a little thing called "probable cause" unless you mean a reporter getting a scoop, in which case, have at it...
:good And it's chicken fighting.... A lot different to dog fighting. Everyone has their own little double standards... Should we shut-down all Zoo's? Should we ban all horse races? If no, well...
I dont like it but yet it is different because its legal not saying its right but you gotta go with the law its legal.
I think that the whole thing is bull****. I know a guy that breeds animals for the purpose of being shot, he trains them everday to run from one tree to the other out in the open. Then once hunting seasons start guys come from all over to shot bambi in the head, something that she has been born to do. This for the most part is a class issue. guys for the most part that are involved in dog fighting arent amoung the social elite while on the other hand our freaking vice president shot one of his homeboys on a hunting trip...Go figure. Now im not in favor of fighting dogs or any other animal for that matter, but I just dont see the difference. As a dog breeder (parttime), and a person that breeds what is seen as a fighting breed (American Staffordshire Terriers), I make everyone that buys one of my dogs sign a waiver stating that the dog will not be used for fighting. Now I know that it doesnt stop it, but it gives me some teeth, if I find out that one is being fought I can go back and take the dog, which is something that I have done a few times.
