Is Joshua Buatsi too boring personality wise to be a PPV star

Na. His got a pleasing style in the ring. His going all the way and will be a star.

There is no such thing as a PPV star - that is terminology used by Chris Eubank Snr when discussing his son appearing on ITV PPV.

There are sports stars which include boxing stars who may or may not roger the plethora of boxing and wrestling PPV mugths

I take it your first post in this thread saying similar didn't get enough attention?

 

The classic example of this to me is Deontay Wilder. His marketing team are terrible in my view with their heads still firmly lodged somewhere in the 1990's. They've tried repeatedly to try and shoehorn him into the Mike Tyson 'baddest man on the planet' box when he's clearly nothing like him whatsoever.

When BT Sport, who have some very sharp marketing minds on board, were promoting the Wilder v Fury fight they produced some great footage with Wilder and his kids, Wilder in the gym goofing off, Wilder in Belfast meeting people with an easy natural charm.

Wilder should have been building an image based on the reality of who he is, on the father who entered the gym to provide for his sick daughter, on the natural athlete who came to boxing late but has stayed with his home town trainer throughout. Every time they try and make him some second rate Tyson I cringe for him because it's just not him. I think they underestimate their own audience tbh.

 

As you pointed out in your post, the marketing team for American boxers seem to want to portray them all as Tyson or Mayweather. I was not aware of the BT positioning of Wilder but I do see the example of Joshua is a easy road to take.

To be marketable, you either have to be liked or extremely unliked. Guess what, it is easier to achieve the first.

I find it pathetic that you have to have an amazing personality to be a ppv star in boxing. Can't the boxing speak for itself?

You gonna force an introvert to be extroverted? You gonna force a quiet guys to put on an act then call him fake?

Just leave them alone, the sport is already tough to be using brain space to create a persona or vibrant personality just to impress people like YOU.

Marketability and personality are two different things. The former is the ability to shift tickets, PPVs, viewing figures and merchandise, and in the current era to generate clicks, views, shares or whatever.

You don't necessarily need a compelling personality to be marketable. Novak Djokovic has more personality than Federer and Nadal combined, but is less popular and marketable than either. Personality can of course help, but it's just one piece of what can be a very complex puzzle in connecting with the public.

Boxing is an event driven sport, and making money is as much about rivalries and contrasts as it is about being able to crack jokes on camera and cut WWE style promos. Carl Froch for example had (unfortunately) the same personality throughout his career, and much the same ability and fighting style for most of it as well. He did well for himself, but didn't really connect with the British public until he had a natural antagonist and a compelling rivalry via George Groves. The Froch-Kessler fights were great entertainment and did decent numbers; Kessler was also a better fighter than Groves. However, Froch-Kessler was never going to hit the same heights at the box office.

Buatsi isn't exactly Mr Personality, but how much he draws will depend a lot more on who he fights and how successful he is. If he wins a World title and gets big fights, he'll be a money draw and PPV fighter.
