Yeah, any true top welterweight would have put Corrales away early. The fact that Clottey couldn't just goes to show you that he isn't as good of a puncher as people say.

I've seen Clottey against Cruz, Alvarez, Corrales, Margarito, Gutierrez and Henry.

He really doesnt punch that hard i think people assume he does because of his size and build for the weight.

Exactly. He's built like a brick wall and probably looks stronger than anybody in the weight class. But his power isn't anything to write home about.

And because of his bulid i think he does drain down to WW. I think he came in at 170 V corrales. I think the draining takes away from his power.

Clottey's style may be what ultimately keeps him from the elite level. As far as his natural ability however he has the tools to be elite. He takes a good punch, has the very fast hands, and the physical strength to stand inside and withstand punishment.

If he calmed down some and just paced himself, picked his shots easier and maintained his high guard he'd be even more impressive than Ike Quartey was (which btw is one of my more favorite fighters of the 90s). Clottey just tries too hard in the first half of the fight that he is a spent bullet by the second half. Corrales was just not there to take advantage of that reality.

One other thing you can't forget here is that Ike had real power. Clottey simply doesn't. He has to be more of a boxer but it's possible to do. He just has to be better at pacing himself and relaxing.

IMO, the most underrated fighter is Celestino Caballero. A guy who beat him, Ricardo Cordoba, might be on that list as well.

He had that award in 2006 but after that performance against Lacievra, his underappreciationg status went away, he needs a name like Molitor or Marquez.

    Overrated.

I could say he is a good and balanced boxer without any gimmick... A gimmick which makes a special thing of a fighter, such as incredible speed, stamina or punching power, elusiveness or even wrestling abilities...

But he is not even balanced. His punching power is below average.

One of them. Definately would have beaten Margarito, the injury so obviously lost him the fight.

    Wow... I am stunned. :huh

The amount of people here that think Clottey is overrated is very surprising. I think I will re-post this in a year or so after he has a belt. He will definitely have one if given the chance. I have no doubt in my mind.

I think Junior Witter is pretty under-rated. He's a lot better than most give him credit for. I think if he finally managed to back Hatton into a corner and convince him to fight, people will come to realize it.

Even Cintron or Quintana can have a belt for a while. Clottey is likely to have IBF (vacated if Margarito fights Cotto) , but this wouldn't prove anything.
