Man these merry go round threads are tedious what I will say is though wilder travelled to Russia to fight povetkin after some crazy russian billionaire won the bid rather than duck out of it. Whyte was given opportunities against Ortiz and brezeale to become mandatory and refused to fight either. Did wonders with Whyte who should have lost in Manchester against chisora.
Some on here must come from an alternative time line: Wilder travelled to Russia Whyte refused to fight Breazeale Joshua was never born Everyone is happy
My mistake I though he did but quick google he didn't after povetkin failed a drug test and stayed in Sheffield.
Good post. I don’t think anyone should really question Wilder on his gumption. He was clearly going to be the underdog against Povetkin and was happily going to travel. He rematched Fury twice after getting a gift in the first fight and must have known he was up against it. He got spanked in the second one.
Yeah he's 39 his legs are gone mate and he took an absolute ever lasting pasting off fury especially that second one and never looked like quitting. Which probably hasn't helped. They also said he wouldn't fight Ortiz who was avoided by many heavyweights at the time. Its a shame cus that was interesting fight. Ah remember the days of super fueled Sasha when he was knocking out the likes of Mike Perez in a couple of rounds hahaha.
Ortiz wasn't avoided by anybody. He was a PED cheat, who played himself out of the mandatory position for the WBA belt. After that he declined the offer to fight AJ for 10x his highest earnings to date. Saying Ortiz was some kind of a boogeyman who got all the top heavies afraid was a good marketing strategy by Wilder's team.
Poor Ortiz. Constantly being avoided, the guy just can’t catch a break to get a fight anywhere. https://www.express.co.uk/sport/box...n=continue_reading_button#amp-readmore-target
Well, he did a very terrible job if he wanted to save AJ from the big bad Ortiz, as it was under Hearn when Ortiz became the WBA mandatory. AJ would be forced to fight Ortiz or give up the belt. But then Ortiz was caught on PEDs and WBA revoked his mandatory status. So I guess Ortiz was AJ's biggest fan and saved him from himself, lol.
Just stumbled across it and cannot believe that Wilder was facing this opponent in his 11th fight and even more so still shocked that Joshua lost to his little brother.
