Just saw his fight against Kash Ali 286lbs..feels like he is even slower now and he improved his defense zero against a zero opponent What's his plan? I doubt he could beat Whyte now This content is protected
There's a question mark over Joyce right now. He didn't impress on his return as he came in so heavy but he didn't look shot either, but then he wasn't facing an opponents who was a threat. If he was younger he could do what Joshua did after back to back losses and take a year or so to rebuild by fighting regularly, but at 38 he can't waste time. We need to see him in with someone better to really see how much he has left. I'm not righting him off just yet, fighters lose, even by brutal KO and can come back.
Joyce was a late starter and a guy who due to his style was always going to have to do things the hard way. As such he was always going to be done the moment he lost his 0. The first Zhang loss was pretty bad, but at least he wasn't knocked off his feet in that one. But the second loss was pretty much the nail in the coffin. I mean good for him for continuing but I suspect he's now too old and too lacking in career momentum to make another run at the top, and if he runs into another big puncher again it could spell the end. I thought his return performance against Ali was very underwhelming; he came in way too heavy and looked fat to boot (Joyce generally looks solid even when he's at the higher end of the scale) and his lack of speed was absolutely shocking. Worse his defence was completely non-existent (how many times did Ali hit him with his OH right?) which either shows that he hasn't learned from the Zhang losses that his chin isn't uncrackable or that he can't make any changes and will thus always be someone who can potentially get KOed again if put against the wrong opponent. I was high on the Joyce train for a while because I genuinely thought he was much better than he looked, and the Parker win proved me right, but it looks like he's gradually morphed into everything his detractors have painted him as, a slow-as-molasses skill-less brawler who can't block a punch to save his life. I don't have much faith in him going forward unfortunately, but if he does continue then best of luck to him.
His slow-fast speed may well be shot but there is a chance he can find the right equilibrium again if he comes in a lot lighter next time than he did against Ali.
As a major contender, yes. He is washed up and damaged goods before he ever reached his prime. He hasn't got a five-year cycle in him to get his confidence and drive back. But he can still be part of some good fights. And he is aided by the fact that the division is currently at a very low ebb. So if he wants to stick around and make some money, its there for him.
No, not completely done, not until the fat lady sings. I always thought Joyce could throw up surprising wins where he really shouldn't. He's an attrition fighter that could've overwhelmed certain other top ten rated fighters. His whole fighting style and defence screams loss. But, he did very well overall. The proofs there. Who's to say he can't have one last big hurrah?. Even based on his bad show with Kash. I'll totally write him off when she sings...
It's clear he's not going to be top dog or even close but there are some good fights out there for him that are winnable and will pay well.
He’s not very good. Fringe guy/stepping stone at best. Hits hard and has a decent chin so gets the odd cheap win but he’s pretty average in reality.
Dubois' coach recommends a rematch against Yoka to avenge his loss at the Olympics, I think Zhang finished off Joyce...
See how he looks in the next one. Needs to lose a bit of weight. Came in way too heavy. Apart from that it was the usual get hit by the right hand which I've only ever seen him try and avoid against dubious. Slowly grind them down.
