Is Juan Manuel Marquez a better boxer than Canelo Alvarez?

Marquez is a couple classes above Canelo in terms of skill and IMO is the far more instinctually gifted fighter between the two. Canelo is without question the better chemically enhanced fighter though, which is a decent distinction I guess.

 

I think Canelo is more complete so one could argue that he's better. That's not a knock on JMM who was great in his own right.

 

Canelo only shows power against much smaller men. Naturally slimmer, skinnier guys. Canelo has powerful and solid frame, but he's not a big puncher. And he's able to show power against guys with no chin too, but not against a guy his own size with a decent chin.

 

He's more versatile. Because he's able to take the lead. Both are natural counter punchers, but Marquez has been unable to figure out pure boxers his whole career. He's only truly comfortable against a come forward fighter.

 

Hard to compare based on era, weight, and Canelo's incomplete career.

What's obvious to me is that most people haven't watched Marquez in his prime which was at 126. Marquez had mixed success, but had strings of victories that made him the man for time periods at 126 and 130. He was undisputed and lineal champ at 135. That KO of Pacquiao is a signature victory.

Canelo has a solid resume, but he hasn't quite dominated a weight class yet without some controversy and still hasn't had a signature victory like Marquez.

Better boxer Canelo. More effective JMM.

Canelo is more multi dimensional. Canelo can box, brawl, pressure, you name it. JMM however is a better counter puncher than Canelo who is a natural counter puncher himself. JMM also took more risks during fights to get the job done decisively. He also has a better resume.

 

Canelo is bigger not the better boxer. Marquez is the better and more respected boxer world wide. Proven atg no tainted stuff against his name. A warrior and has many fans admire the heart of a champion.

 

I'm a huge fan of both, maybe slightly more of JMM just because of the memories.

Marquez like Canelo has his share of haters who attempt to belittle their accomplishments. Marquez has his close fights with John, Barrera, Pacquiao and Canelo with Lara, and Golovkin. I personally think JMM roided for the 4th Pac fight, but I don't diminish that win because I believe Pacquiao had been roiding for a long time.

I've always thought both fighters were similar in style with each having qualities over the other. One thing I give credit to Canelo over JMM is his defense, he rarely gets hit clean, and makes his opponents miss much more than what they average. One thing I give JMM over Canelo is his willingness to take risks and leave it on the line.

 

Of course bro lol... Marquez is leagues above Canelo.

Juan Estrada is more skilled than Canelo too.
